At a glance

Prophet Lot, peace be upon him, was a noble messenger chosen by Allah to guide a community that had plunged into unprecedented indecency. Raised alongside his uncle, Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, Lot learned steadfast faith, hospitality, and moral resolve. When sent to the corrupt people of Sodom, he confronted their brazen sins with gentle admonition, sincere counsel, and an unwavering call to sound natural instinct.

His story stands as a timeless lesson in moral clarity and spiritual resilience. Surrounded by hostile mockery and threats of expulsion, Lot never diluted the truth or accommodated corruption. Even when his own household was compromised by a treacherous wife, he preserved his integrity, shielded his vulnerable guests, and placed his reliance firmly upon Allah.

Ultimately, Lot's life illustrates the unbending divine law: persistent rebellion against nature and divine command invites devastating consequence, while those who cling to purity, gratitude, and faith are enveloped in divine protection and mercy.

Words to know

Lut, peace be upon him

A noble prophet and nephew of Abraham who was endowed with divine wisdom and sent to guide the corrupt people of Sodom toward faith and chastity.

Introduction to Lot

From the paper: «

Prophet Lot, peace be upon him, was among the elite messengers sent by Allah to guide humanity and reform societal corruption. He lived during the era of Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him, and most scholars affirm that Lot was Abraham's nephew. Growing up under Abraham's loving tutelage, Lot witnessed the miraculous preservation of Abraham when cast into the fire, which deepened his conviction and complete submission to Allah.

Lot embraced the faith with unwavering resolve and migrated with his uncle from Iraq to the blessed land of the Levant, centered around Jerusalem. The Quran celebrates this migration as a journey into a land brimming with material blessings, lush soil, and prophetic lights Al-Anbiya 21:71, Al-Ankabut 29:26. Lot accompanied Abraham until divine command directed him to settle in the valley of Sodom in modern-day Jordan.

Allah blessed Lot with profound discernment, authoritative wisdom, and beneficial knowledge, honoring him among the great prophetic lineage cited in Surah al-An'am Al-An'am 6:84-90, Al-Anbiya 21:74. Living among vulgar, deviant people, Lot utilized this divine wisdom to patiently counsel them and endure their hostility without ever losing his moral balance.

«لوط عليه السلام نبي من الأنبياء، الذين بعثهم الله عز وجل لهداية الناس وإصلاحهم، ولقد عاش في زمن الخليل إبراهيم عليه السلام، وذهب كثيرٌ من أهل العلم إلى أن لوطا عليه السلام: ابن أخي إبراهيم عليه السلام آمن به وهاجر معه فكان غراسا طيبا لدعوة إبراهيم عليه السلام.»

Lot with his people

From the paper: «

Upon arriving in Sodom, Prophet Lot was horrified by the community's extreme deviance. His call prioritized correct theology before addressing social morals, emphasizing that righteous conduct must rest upon sound faith in Allah Ash-Shu'ara 26:160-166. He appealed to them as a sincere brother and trustworthy messenger, seeking no earthly compensation for his guidance.

Lot boldly denounced their signature wickedness: approaching men with lust instead of women. The Quran emphasizes that Sodom was the very first society in human history to invent this perversion Al-A'raf 7:80-81, Al-Ankabut 29:28. Beyond this obscenity, they engaged in highway robbery, betrayed traveling companions, terrorized passersby, and openly practiced vulgar acts inside their social clubs without shame Al-Ankabut 29:28-29.

Rather than repenting, the people answered his warm advice with mockery, hostility, and threats of banishment Ash-Shu'ara 26:167. In their inverted moral universe, purity became a punishable offense; they declared that Lot and his followers must be expelled simply because they dared to remain chaste Al-A'raf 7:82, An-Naml 27:56. When they insolently challenged Lot to bring on Allah's punishment, he turned his heart toward his Lord, pleading for victory against this corrupt folk Al-Ankabut 29:29-30.

«أرسل الله تعالى لوطا عليه السلام إلى قرية سدوم وما حولها، وقد راعه ما هم عليه من شذوذ وانحراف وجهالة وإسراف، فدعاهم إلى الله تعالى، وبدأ بالعقيدة، ثم عرج إلى الأخلاق والآداب .»

Volume 15

Lot with his daughters

From the paper: «

The domestic life of Prophet Lot reveals the reality of personal accountability before Allah. His wife chose the path of disbelief, betraying him in matters of religion rather than marital fidelity At-Tahrim 66:10. Scholarly consensus affirms that the wives of prophets are divinely protected from committing adultery; her betrayal lay in rejecting his prophethood and aiding the town's sinners by secretly alerting them whenever visitors arrived at his home.

Her close proximity to a prophet brought her no spiritual immunity when judgment came. She remained tethered to the corruption of her people, illustrating that lineage and marital ties cannot rescue a soul that willingly chooses darkness over light.

In stark contrast stood Lot's daughters, who embraced faith, upheld pristine chastity, and submitted sincerely to Allah. When the lustful mob surrounded his house seeking his guests, Lot offered his daughters in honorable marriage Hud 11:78-80. Through this earnest offer, he sought to awaken their dormant conscience, redirect them to lawful natural bonds, and revive human decency. Lot's household was remembered by Allah as the solitary home of true submission and gratitude rescued from ruin Adh-Dhariyat 51:35-36, Al-Qamar 54:34-35.

«والخيانة هنا هي: خيانة كفر لا خيانة زنا، خيانة في الدين لا في العرض ؛ إذ نساء الأنبياء معصومات من الوقوع في خيانة العرض.»

Lot with the angels

From the paper: «

Divine decree set the destruction of Sodom into motion, dispatching noble angels, including Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil, disguised as handsome young men. They first visited Prophet Abraham to announce glad tidings of a righteous son and inform him of their mission to destroy the corrupt people of Lot Hud 11:69-71, Al-Hijr 15:51-60, Adh-Dhariyat 51:24-32.

Arriving at Sodom at dusk, the angels requested hospitality from Lot. Unaware of their heavenly nature, Lot felt deep anguish, fearing his wicked townspeople would assault these defenseless visitors Hud 11:77. His concern proved justified; his wife tipped off the town, and an aggressive crowd rushed to his doorstep, overcome by blind lust Hud 11:78, Al-Hijr 15:67-72.

Lot stood at the doorway, pleading with them to fear Allah and refrain from disgracing his guests. He offered his daughters for lawful marriage, but the mob insolently declared they had no interest in women Hud 11:78-79. Overwhelmed and lacking tribal backing, Lot cried out in pain: 'If only I had the power to resist you or could find shelter in a strong support!' Hud 11:80.

At this climactic moment of distress, the angels revealed their identity, consoling him that their enemies could never harm him Hud 11:81.

The salvation of Lot and his daughters and the destruction of his wife

From the paper: «

Once the angels revealed their divine identity, they commanded Prophet Lot to prepare for departure. He was instructed to take his believing family and leave the city during the remaining darkness of the night, walking behind them to ensure none trailed behind or fell into danger Hud 11:81.

The angels issued a strict instruction: none of the believers were to look back toward the doomed city as judgment descended. This command ensured they would flee with haste, avoid witnessing the terrifying devastation, and remain spiritually detached from the wicked town.

Lot's wife defied this command. Whether lagging behind or turning back in lingering sympathy with the corrupt community, she was struck down by the very punishment that destroyed her people Al-A'raf 7:83, Al-Hijr 15:60, Ash-Shu'ara 26:170-171. The Quran numbers her among the doomed who remained behind.

Allah delivered Lot and his daughters, honoring their steadfast faith, patience, and purity Al-Anbiya 21:74-75. They departed safely into the dawn, welcomed into Allah's vast mercy as righteous servants, leaving behind a ruined landscape devoid of any other believing home Adh-Dhariyat 51:35-36.

«عصمه الله تعالى بما آتاه من حِكَمٍ وعلم وثبته أمام هذا الابتلاء العظيم، ثم خلصه من تلك القرية التي غلب عليها الخبث وطغى عليها الفساق، وأدخله الله في رحمته لينال جزاء صبره وثباته سعادةً وفلاحًا في الدنيا وصلاح بال وقرة عين وعيش هنيءٍ .»

Volume 15

Types of punishment that befell the people of Lot

From the paper: «

Because the sins of Sodom were uniquely brazen and corrupting, Allah subjected them to multiple, compounded forms of retribution that left their lands an enduring warning Al-Hijr 15:75-77, Adh-Dhariyat 51:37.

Their punishment unfolded through terrifying stages:

  • Blindness: As the mob tried to breach Lot's door, Gabriel struck them, blotting out their eyes and leaving them stumbling in darkness Al-Qamar 54:37-39.
  • The Inversion of the Earth: At daybreak, the settlements were uprooted and overturned, turning their highest places into their lowest depths Hud 11:81-82, An-Najm 53:53-54.
  • Raining Stones: Torrents of hard clay stones, stacked and marked for each transgressor, rained down relentlessly from the sky Hud 11:82-83, Adh-Dhariyat 51:33-34.
  • The Roaring Blast: A deafening, explosive shriek struck them at sunrise, shattering their senses and sealing their doom Al-Hijr 15:73.

Scholars such as Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim observed that Allah combined punishments for the people of Lot that were never gathered against any other nation. Because they inverted the pure balance of human nature, inverted their moral values, and weaponized stones against travelers, their divine recompense mirrored their vile deeds perfectly.

Lessons and morals from the story of Lot

From the paper: «

The narrative of Prophet Lot contains vital lessons for every generation of believers. It illustrates the divine methodology of prophetic education, showing how Lot was shaped under Abraham's righteous care before shouldering his demanding mission. It also establishes that genuine social reform must always begin with sound theology, as Lot opened his mission with the message of monotheism before targeting behavioral sins Ash-Shu'ara 26:162.

Lot exemplified extraordinary patience, hospitality, and unyielding defense of moral boundaries. Even when facing a hostile majority, he refused to compromise or seek financial reward Ash-Shu'ara 26:164. His story also highlights that truth requires legitimate strength to shield the vulnerable and restrain injustice.

Furthermore, the fate of Lot's wife demonstrates individual spiritual accountability; family connections to righteous leaders cannot shield a soul from divine justice if one aligns with falsehood At-Tahrim 66:10. Finally, Allah praises Lot and his family for their gratitude amidst intense trial Al-Qamar 54:35. Gratitude flourishes when believers appreciate the gift of moral guidance and preserve their purity even within a decaying society.

Rulings related to the story

From the paper: «

Islamic jurisprudence takes an exceptionally grave stance toward the crime of sodomy, viewing it as a catastrophic rebellion against natural human disposition and a destructive threat to social order. Jurists examined the legal penalties based on prophetic reports and the verdicts of the Companions.

Three main legal positions emerged among scholars:

  • The first view, held by Imams Malik, Ahmad, and a position in the Shafi'i school, rules that the penalty is capital punishment for both active and passive participants, drawing on the report of Ibn Abbas and the consensus of the Companions, who only differed regarding the method of execution.
  • The second view, held by the Shafi'i school, treats the act analogously to adultery, prescribing stoning for the married offender and lashing for the unmarried.
  • The third view, held by the Hanafi school, prescribes discretionary corporal punishment (ta'zir), maintaining that natural human instinct instinctively recoils from this act.

The paper also highlights the strict Quranic prohibition of anal intercourse with women based on Al-Baqarah 2:223, emphasizing that sexual relations must respect the natural site of procreation to safeguard health, dignity, and marital harmony.

«المذهب الأول: وهو مذهب الإمام مالك والإمام أحمد وقول للشافعي وهو أن حد اللوطي القتل فاعلا كان أو مفعولا، محصنا كان أو غير محصن، وهذا القول مروى عن أبى بكر وعمر وعلي وابن عباس رضي الله عنهم ونقل بعض الحنابلة إجماع الصحابة على ذلك .»

Takeaways

  1. Anchor Reform in Sound Theology

Prophetic reform begins by correcting faith before tackling behavioral decay, because genuine, lasting moral change flows only from a heart rooted in reverence for Allah.

  2. Purity Requires Moral Courage

Standing up for chastity and modesty may draw societal hostility, but believers must fearlessly champion decency even when surrounded by pervasive normalization of vice.

  3. Kinship Cannot Substitute for Personal Faith

Spiritual success is entirely individual; being close to pious mentors or family members brings no salvation if your personal choices align with disobedience.

  4. Honor the Sanctity of Natural Instinct

Allah designed marriage and human intimacy with inherent physical and spiritual balance; defying natural boundaries brings physical diseases and ruins societal stability.

Reflect

  • How do you maintain your moral boundaries when popular culture treats modesty and chastity with mockery?
  • In what ways are you actively nurturing gratitude for the gift of guidance and moral clarity in your daily life?
  • Where in your life do you rely on the spiritual prestige of family or community rather than doing the hard work of personal obedience?

Linguistic meaning

Linguistically, 'rajz' refers to severe torment that causes trembling, derived from 'irtajaza' meaning to shake and become violently agitated, reflecting the internal terror and panic that gripped the punished sinners.

«والرجز هو العذاب من قولهم: ارتجز إذا اضطرب، وذلك لِما يلحق المعذب من قلق واضطراب وجزع وهلع، وفى هذه الآية إشارة إلى الحالة النفسية التي لازمت قوم لوط حين عاينوا العذاب وحل بهم ؛ بسبب ما كانوا عليه من الفسق، فالعذاب الذي حاق بهم عذاب حسي ومعنوى.»

How it differs from related terms

Sodomy
Sodomy involves unnatural carnal relations between men, which inverted sound human instinct and was unprecedented in human history, whereas ordinary adultery involves relations with women that natural instinct inherently desires but divine law confines strictly to marriage.
