At a glance

Treachery (khiyanah) represents a profound rupture of trust and a failure of fidelity. In the Quran, it is never treated as a minor lapse or a clever survival strategy. It is recognized as a grave spiritual affliction that strikes at the core of human relationships, community life, and faith itself.

Whether through betraying sacred covenants, abusing trusts, or compromising moral principles in secret, the Quran exposes the reality of treachery across many arenas. It warns that a person who commits betrayal first betrays their own soul, forfeiting inner peace and moral standing.

The Quran establishes clear, principled responses to betrayal while revealing divine consequences. Those who breach trust deprive themselves of divine guidance and Allah's love, while believers are promised divine defense, reminding us that worldly advantage gained through deceit ends in ruin.

Key verses

  1. Al-Anfal 8:58: The paper explains that if you fear treachery from a treaty partner based on clear signs, you must renounce the covenant openly and fairly rather than ambushing them, because Allah does not love the treacherous.
  2. Al-Anfal 8:71: The paper notes that if captives harbor treachery against the Prophet, they have already betrayed Allah through disbelief, and Allah gave believers victory over them before and will do so again.
  3. Yusuf 12:52: The paper highlights the universal rule spoken in the story of Yusuf: Allah never guides or allows the plots of the treacherous to succeed.
  4. Al-Hajj 22:38: The paper explains that Allah actively defends the believers against aggression because He does not love any chronically treacherous, ungrateful person.
  5. At-Tahrim 66:10: The paper cites the wives of Nuh and Lut as examples of treachery in religion, showing that personal proximity to prophets offers no protection when faith and trust are compromised.
  6. An-Nisa 4:107: The paper discusses the divine prohibition against defending those who deceive themselves through theft and false accusations, emphasizing that Allah does not love the habitually deceitful and sinful.

Types of treachery in the Quran

From the paper: «

The Quran identifies multiple distinct arenas where treachery manifests:

  • Betraying Allah and His Messenger: Denying truth, abandoning the innate covenant of monotheism Al-A'raf 7:172, defying the Prophet's guidance, or plotting against the Muslim community while outwardly claiming faith Al-Anfal 8:71.
  • Betraying the Religion: Compromising sacred obligations and aiding opponents of truth. The wives of Nuh and Lut exemplified this treachery in faith At-Tahrim 66:10, acting against their prophetic husbands through hypocrisy and aiding oppressors.
  • Betraying Honor and Chastity: Transgressing the boundaries of marital fidelity and sacred modesty. The narrative surrounding the wife of al-Aziz in the story of Yusuf demonstrates the necessity of clearing oneself from any covert betrayal Yusuf 12:52.
  • Betraying One's Own Soul: Harming oneself through secret sin, illicit desires, or falsely accusing the innocent Al-Baqarah 2:187, An-Nisa 4:107. The wrongdoer deprives their own soul of reward and subjects it to divine punishment.
  • Betraying Public and Private Trusts: Squandering religious duties, misusing public resources, prioritizing personal gain over collective well-being, or failing the overarching trust of guiding humanity with justice Al-Anfal 8:27, Al-Baqarah 2:40, Al-Baqarah 2:143, An-Nisa 4:135, Al-Ma'idah 5:8, Al-Ahzab 33:72.
  • Betraying Covenants: Breaking signed treaties, violating solemn oaths, and initiating stealthy hostilities against those with whom an agreement stands Al-Isra 17:34, An-Nahl 16:91, Al-Mu'minun 23:8, Al-Anfal 8:58, Al-Anfal 8:55-58, Al-Ma'idah 5:13.

How to deal with traitors

From the paper: «

The Quran outlines a firm and balanced methodology for confronting treachery across personal, communal, and political realms:

  • Refusing to Defend or Shield Them: Believers are forbidden from defending wrongdoers, covering up their crimes, or acting as their advocates. When Tu'mah ibn Ubayriq stole a shield and framed an innocent Jewish citizen, verses were revealed sternly prohibiting the Prophet from arguing on behalf of the deceivers An-Nisa 4:105-109. Justice in Islam is strictly impartial and cannot bend along partisan, tribal, or religious lines.
  • Openly Renouncing Broken Covenants: When clear signs of betrayal appear from treaty partners, the community must formally notify them that the covenant is dissolved Al-Anfal 8:58. Islam rejects covert preemptive strikes or exploiting ongoing peace treaties while harboring bad intentions. Noble ends never justify ignoble, deceitful means.
  • Deterring Them with Decisive Strength: Once treachery is confirmed and treaties are properly dissolved, the Quran commands firm confrontation Al-Anfal 8:57. When aggressors face unmistakable consequences for breaking covenants, it prevents ongoing corruption and serves as a powerful deterrent to others who might consider similar betrayal.
«إن الإسلام يريد للبشرية أن ترتفع، ويريد للبشرية أن تعف، فلا يبيح الغدر في سبيل الغلب، وهو يكافح لأسمى الغايات وأشرف المقاصد، ولا يسمح للغاية الشريفة أن تستخدم الوسيلة الخسيسة.»

Deprivation of guidance to the truth

From the paper: «

A primary consequence that overtakes the treacherous is that Allah withholds His divine guidance and blessing from their endeavors Yunus 10:25, Al-Qasas 28:56.

As recorded in the Quran, Allah does not guide the scheme of the betrayers Yusuf 12:52. This represents a cosmic law: deceptive tactics may appear successful in their opening moments, but falsehood cannot endure and is ultimately shattered by truth Al-Anbiya 21:18. Treacherous schemes inevitably unravel, exposing their perpetrators to public disgrace in this life before the next.

Furthermore, those who persist in betrayal lose receptivity to divine guidance, even if they reside in the very households of revelation. The wives of Nuh and Lut lived alongside chosen prophets, yet their inner treachery rendered that holy proximity completely useless At-Tahrim 66:10. Familial ties, noble lineage, and pious companions offer no protection against divine judgment when personal faith and sincere obedience are absent.

Deprivation of the love of Allah Almighty

From the paper: «

Among the most severe spiritual consequences facing the treacherous is being completely shut out from Allah's love and goodwill Al-Anfal 8:58, Al-Hajj 22:38, An-Nisa 4:107.

Divine affection is the ultimate source of safety, honor, and inner peace. By explicitly declaring that He does not love any chronically deceitful or ungrateful soul, Allah underscores how deeply offensive betrayal is to Him. This divine disfavor applies universally, whether the victim of treachery is a fellow believer or a non-believer An-Nisa 4:105.

Because Allah despises betrayal, He commands His servants never to stoop to it. A believer must not repay dishonesty with deceit. Concurrently, this denial of divine love carries a joyful reassurance for the faithful: Allah Himself steps forward to defend those who believe against the machinations of the deceitful Al-Hajj 22:38. Those who keep their covenants remain secure under divine shelter.

«ومن أقسى عقوبات الله تعالى للخائنين: أنه يحرمهم محبته، ويمنعهم مودته، تلك المحبة التي هي سبب كل خير، وعدمها سبب كل بلاء وضر.»

Foiling their plots

From the paper: «

The Quran establishes that Allah actively nullifies and frustrates the cunning schemes of the treacherous Yusuf 12:52.

By framing this principle with the Arabic definite article (al-), the verse denotes comprehensive scope: every single act of treachery is subject to divine frustration. The text specifically attributes the lack of guidance directly to the plot itself (kayd al-kha'inin), emphasizing that the scheme itself is fundamentally flawed, lost, and incapable of reaching its intended outcome.

Even when conspirators believe their plans have been meticulously laid out in secret, Allah abandons them to their limited human abilities. Denied divine assistance, their stratagems backfire, ultimately revealing their hidden corruption to the world and comforting those who have suffered at the hands of dishonest plotters.

Destruction

From the paper: «

The final outcome awaiting persistent betrayers is divine defeat, humiliation, and destruction across both worlds:

  • Defeat and Capture in This World: Allah promised His Prophet that if treaty breakers renewed their treason, He would grant believers victory over them again, just as He did previously at the Battle of Badr Al-Anfal 8:71. Treason cannot stand against divine decree; it leads directly to loss of sovereignty and security.
  • Divine Intervention on Behalf of the Faithful: Allah undertakes the defense of the believers against aggressive adversaries, authorizing righteous defense and curbing the power of persistent transgressors Al-Hajj 22:38.
  • Ruin in the Hereafter: The ultimate ruin of treachery unfolds on the Day of Judgment. The Quran cites the fate of earlier betrayers who were commanded into the Fire alongside all other wrongdoers At-Tahrim 66:10. Worldly status, marital bonds, and high social standing dissolve, leaving the deceitful soul to face absolute divine justice alone.

Takeaways

  1. Uphold Absolute Justice Regardless of Identity

Never defend or excuse wrongful acts simply because the perpetrator belongs to your family, community, or religious group. Allah sternly warned against defending the deceitful against an innocent person An-Nisa 4:105-107.

  2. Never Rationalize Dishonest Means for Good Ends

In Islam, a noble goal never excuses a base method. Believers are forbidden from breaking promises or practicing deceit even when confronting opponents Al-Anfal 8:58.

  3. Rely on Personal Righteousness, Not Associations

Proximity to righteous people or religious institutions cannot substitute for your own personal integrity before Allah, as demonstrated by the wives of Nuh and Lut At-Tahrim 66:10.

  4. Guard Your Moral Integrity in Private

Every act of secret sin or deceit is fundamentally a betrayal of one's own soul Al-Baqarah 2:187, An-Nisa 4:107. Sincere integrity begins with consciousness of Allah in secret.

  5. Trust in Divine Defense When Facing Betrayal

When others plot against you or break their word, take principled steps and remain patient, knowing that Allah actively defends the faithful and frustrates deceit Al-Hajj 22:38, Yusuf 12:52.

Reflect

  • Are there any implicit commitments, professional responsibilities, or personal promises in my life that I have been neglecting?
  • Do I ever find myself defending someone's questionable actions simply because of friendship, shared identity, or loyalty?
  • When interacting with people who may be dishonest, do I hold fast to honesty, or am I tempted to compromise my principles?
  • How conscious am I that my private sins and hidden compromises are ultimately acts of injustice against my own soul?

Linguistic meaning

The Arabic root (kh-w-n) signifies deficiency and diminishing, specifically a failure to render complete fidelity and loyalty. It is also used when a person's good condition turns worse.

«يقال: خانه الدهر والنعيم خونًا، إذا تغير حاله إلى شر منها.»

Technical meaning

Al-Raghib al-Asfahani defined treachery as falling short in honoring a trust, while al-Fayruzabadi defined it as being trusted by someone yet failing to act with sincere advice and goodwill toward them.

How it differs from related terms

Plotting / Deception
Plotting involves diverting someone from their objective through covert artifice and subtle maneuver. While blameworthy plotting closely parallels treachery, treachery specifically constitutes a breach within an established context of trust and confidence.
Concealed Scheme
Both share the desire to affect another covertly. However, treachery is deceit committed where trust was granted, making it universally blameworthy, whereas a scheme (kayd) may be praiseworthy and just when carried out by Allah to requite wrongdoers or counter evil.
Hypocrisy
Both involve displaying outward goodwill while concealing malice. As al-Raghib noted, treachery and hypocrisy are fundamentally alike, but treachery is evaluated specifically in relation to covenants and trusts, whereas hypocrisy is evaluated in relation to religion and creed.
