At a glance
In the Quran, hope (raja') is not passive wishful thinking. It is a profound act of worship that anchors the heart in Allah's boundless grace while actively driving the limbs toward good deeds. The Quran presents genuine hope as a vital inner companion to faith, standing shoulder to shoulder with the fear of Allah and deep love for Him.
Without hope, spiritual life grinds to a halt. When you maintain true hope in Allah's promise, you view trials through the lens of His mercy and anticipate meeting Him in the hereafter. This living hope transforms worship from a dry obligation into an eager pursuit of divine favor and ultimate salvation.

Hope for the Last Day
From the paper: «
True believers are distinguished in the Quran by their longing to meet Allah and their anticipation of the Day of Judgment. The paper explains that hoping for Allah's meeting means looking forward to seeing Him in Paradise, awaiting His generous reward, and preparing for the final standing before Him Al-Ankabut 29:5, Al-Kahf 18:110.
Ibn al-Qayyim describes this longing as the highest form of hope. It purifies the soul, detaches the heart from worldly distraction, and fills the believer with eager anticipation. Allah gently comforts those yearning souls by reminding them that His appointed time is near Al-Ankabut 29:5.
Believers also direct their hope toward the Last Day Al-Ankabut 29:36, Al-Ahzab 33:21, Al-Mumtahanah 60:6. When Prophet Shu'ayb commanded his people to worship Allah and hope for the Last Day Al-Ankabut 29:36, he called them to anticipate its realities and perform deeds that protect against its terrors. Keeping the final reckoning in view rescues a person from unlawful material greed, cheating, and corruption on earth.

Hope for Allah's mercy
From the paper: «
The Quran identifies the quest for divine mercy as the defining attribute of the righteous. In Surah al-Baqarah, Allah praises those who believe, emigrate, and struggle in His path, declaring that they are the ones who truly hope for His mercy Al-Baqarah 2:218.
Scholars note a profound lesson here: rather than making believers complacent, the mention of hope following such heavy sacrifices inspires humility. A believer understands that salvation is not a legal entitlement forced by deeds, but a pure gift of divine grace. Even after giving up wealth and comfort, the faithful remain between hope in Allah's vast mercy and fear of their own shortcomings An-Nisa 4:97-100, Al-Mu'minun 23:60, Al-Baqarah 2:46.
Furthermore, true worship requires balancing this hope with fear Al-Isra 17:57. Hoping without striving is mere delusion (tamanni), whereas genuine hope energizes continuous devotion. Believers know that Allah never disappoints those who anchor their hearts in His benevolence.

Hope for Allah's reward
From the paper: «
Hoping for Allah's reward gives believers unmatched strength during adversity. When facing grief or injury, the Quran reminds the faithful that while both they and their adversaries experience pain, believers hold a supreme advantage: they hope from Allah for what their opponents cannot expect An-Nisa 4:104.
This hope encompasses several dimensions:
- Spiritual reward and eternal blessing in Paradise, which scholars note is a valid and praised motivation for worship, refuting claims that worshiping for reward lacks purity.
- Divine aid, victory, and the vindication of truth over falsehood in this life Ali 'Imran 3:126.
- An enduring investment that never perishes, exemplified by those who recite Allah's Book, establish prayer, and spend secretly and openly Fatir 35:29, Fatir 35:30.
Trusting in the All-Knowing, All-Wise Lord provides the believer with supreme solace, turning every difficulty into an opportunity for spiritual elevation At-Tawbah 9:34, Al-Baqarah 2:125, Al-Jathiyah 45:14, Nuh 71:13.
«فهؤلاء الذين يكثرون من قراءة القرآن الكريم، ويؤدون ما أوجبه الله تعالى عليهم، يرجون من الله تعالى الثواب الجزيل، والربح الدائم؛ لأنهم جمعوا في طاعتهم له تعالى بين الإكثار من ذكره، وبين العبادات البدنية والمالية.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Hope for the days of Allah
From the paper: «
The Quran instructs believers to pardon those who do not hope for the "Days of Allah" Al-Jathiyah 45:14. Scholars explain that the "Days of Allah" refers to the historic moments when Allah grants victory to His allies or brings decisive retribution upon tyrannical oppressors, akin to ancient Arabian accounts of battle days.
It also denotes the days of His conspicuous favors and ultimate reckoning in the hereafter Ibrahim 14:5, An-Naba 78:39. Disbelievers do not anticipate these days because they place no reliance on Allah and reject the resurrection Al-Furqan 25:21, Nuh 71:13.
By characterizing the opponents this way, the Quran offers deep comfort to the Muslim community. Believers are commanded to meet insults with patience and magnanimous forgiveness Ali 'Imran 3:186, knowing with full certainty that Allah has guaranteed victory and recompense for those whose hope rests in Him.

Hope regarding disbelievers
From the paper: «
In stark contrast to believers, disbelievers are repeatedly described in the Quran as having no hope in meeting Allah, no expectation of a resurrection, and no fear of the reckoning An-Naba 78:27, Yunus 10:7, Al-Furqan 25:21.
Because they do not anticipate standing before their Creator, they become wholly satisfied with the fleeting pleasures of this worldly life and rest contented in them Yunus 10:7. This total immersion in worldly comfort blinds them to signs pointing toward the hereafter. Consequently, their arrogance leads them to mock divine revelations and demand impossible proofs Yunus 10:11, Yunus 10:15, Al-Furqan 25:21.
Scholars note that one can only hope for what one prepares to meet. A person who invests nothing for the hereafter cannot truly hope for its joy, leaving them trapped in spiritual ruin.

Quranic methods in discussing hope
From the paper: «
The Quran utilizes diverse and impactful literary methods to instill hope within hearts:
- Direct Command: Ordering believers to embrace hope, as when Shu'ayb commanded his nation to worship Allah and hope for the Last Day Al-Ankabut 29:36.
- Praising Those with Hope: Commending believers who strive in Allah's cause and yearn for His mercy Al-Baqarah 2:218, Al-Isra 17:57.
- Censuring Those Who Abandon It: Condemning the deniers who neither expect the reckoning nor look forward to the resurrection An-Naba 78:27, Al-Furqan 25:40.
- Prohibiting Its Opposite: Forbidding despair (ya's) and despondency (qunut), declaring that only disbelievers despair of Allah's mercy Yusuf 12:87, Az-Zumar 39:53.
- Pairing Hope with Fear: Praising righteous servants who continually balance hopeful yearning with reverent dread Al-Isra 17:57, Az-Zumar 39:9, Al-Anbiya 21:90.
- Rhetorical Questioning: Rebuking those who lack reverence and awe for Allah's supreme majesty Nuh 71:13, Al-Inshiqaq 84:20, An-Nisa 4:78.

Means of achieving what is hoped for
From the paper: «
To see your hopes realized, the Quran lays down four essential spiritual means:
- Righteous Action: Authentic hope requires hard work. Deeds must be performed sincerely for Allah alone and in strict accordance with the prophetic sunnah Al-Kahf 18:110, Al-Mulk 67:2.
- Shunning Forbidden Deeds: One must abandon major and minor sins, especially polytheism (shirk) and ostentation (riya'), which instantly nullify good deeds Al-Kahf 18:110, An-Nazi'at 79:40-41, Ta-Ha 20:74.
- Earnest Supplication: Prayer is an indispensable vehicle for turning hopes into reality. Prophet Ya'qub demonstrated this when he turned to prayer and patient trust, never losing faith that his lost sons would return Yusuf 12:83, Yusuf 12:87, Al-Qalam 68:32.
- Following the Prophet: Taking the Messenger of Allah as an absolute role model is mandatory for anyone genuinely placing hope in Allah and the final reckoning Al-Ahzab 33:21, Al-Mumtahanah 60:6.

Effects of hope
From the paper: «
Nurturing genuine hope produces profound spiritual fruits in this life and the next:
- Increase in Faith and Knowledge: Hope harmonizes with fear and love to elevate the soul, drawing the servant into nocturnal devotion and intimate nearness to Allah Al-Isra 17:57, Az-Zumar 39:9, Fatir 35:28.
- Incentive for Continuous Striving: Far from causing sluggishness, hope is the engine of all spiritual work. Just as Ya'qub's hope drove him to send his sons back to search actively for Yusuf Yusuf 12:87, hope in Allah's reward spurs ceaseless worship Al-Kahf 18:110.
- Unshakable Patience: Those who hope for divine compensation remain resilient through agonizing grief. Ya'qub bore years of sorrow with "beautiful patience" because his hope outshone every impossibility Yusuf 12:18, Yusuf 12:87, Yusuf 12:94-95, as did the owners of the blighted garden who pinned their hope on Allah's restoration Al-Qalam 68:32.
«والمقصود: أن الرجاء أعظم حادٍ يحدو إلى العمل، ويدفع إلى البذل، فليس الراجي كاليائس، فلو يأس يعقوب عليه السلام لما أمرهم بالذهاب ولا البحث ولا التحسس.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Pair your hope with practical effort
Hoping for forgiveness or Paradise while neglecting obligations is empty wishing (tamanni). True hope must be accompanied by righteous deeds and repentance.
Balance hope and fear in worship
Keep your spiritual state balanced: let the fear of punishment curb your impulses toward sin, and let hope in divine mercy fuel your eagerness to do good.
Never succumb to despair during hardship
No matter how bleak circumstances appear, follow the prophetic example of Ya'qub by maintaining absolute trust in Allah's relief and persistent supplication.
Emulate the Prophet to validate your aspirations
The surest proof that your hope for Allah and the Last Day is sincere is your daily commitment to following the Prophet's character and teachings.
Reflect
- Are there areas in your life where you are passively wishing for Allah's help without putting in the necessary personal effort?
- When facing painful delays or trials, does your heart lean toward the despair of the heedless or the resilient hope of the prophets?
- How balanced are hope and fear in your daily prayers and moral choices?
- What specific righteous deed can you perform today to embody your yearning to meet Allah?

How it differs from related terms
Long-term Expectation
- While closely related to hope, amal is predominantly applied to outcomes that are distant or difficult to realize, whereas raja' is most often used for matters whose attainment is near. It is also noted that amal carries a stronger sense of certainty because raja' contains an element of caution or apprehension.
Wishful Thinking
- Tamanni is the passive longing of the heart for an outcome, whether possible or impossible, without exerting the effort or utilizing the means necessary to achieve it. In contrast, raja' is strictly accompanied by hard work and exhausting one's capacity to take the right means.
Fear
- Khawf is the expectation of an approaching calamity or the loss of something beloved, representing the exact emotional and spiritual counterpart to raja', which is the expectation of obtaining something beloved. Both are inseparable pillars of sound worship.
