At a glance
In the Quranic worldview, nothing in existence is left to wander aimlessly or endure indefinitely. Allah has established an appointed term, known as الأَجَل ajal, for every creation: human lifespans, the development of an embryo, the rise and fall of civilizations, the orbits of the sun and moon, and the life of the universe itself. Even your daily dealings and acts of worship are structured by precise, purposeful timeframes.
Understanding the reality of appointed terms transforms your relationship with time and destiny. It removes the crippling anxiety of worldly panic, for no soul departs before its written hour, and no hardship arrives without a predetermined limit. At the same time, because Allah has kept the exact date of your final term hidden, you are called to live in active, vigilant preparation: racing to do good, mending bonds, and repenting before your time arrives.
Key verses
- Al-An'am 6:2: Allah establishes that human life has an individual appointed term ending at death, alongside a greater term for the entire creation known only to Him.
- Ar-Ra'd 13:2: The celestial bodies, such as the sun and the moon, run in their orbits until a decreed appointed term when the current cosmic order ends.
- Al-Qasas 28:28: Human agreements and contracts can establish mutual appointed terms by choice, as shown in the agreed term of work between Musa and the righteous elder.
- Hud 11:104: The Day of Resurrection is not delayed out of neglect, but solely for an exact, numbered term determined by Allah's infinite wisdom.
- Fatir 35:13: The sun and moon are subjugated to run directly toward their fixed final term, highlighting Allah's absolute sovereignty over the universe.
- Luqman 31:29: Using the preposition meaning 'toward' portrays the ongoing journey of heavenly bodies across their vast courses until their designated end.

The reality of appointed terms
From the paper: «
The appointed terms established by Allah are woven directly into His divine decree. These terms fall into three categories. First are terms known exclusively to Allah: the cosmic moments of creation, lifespans, the hour of the Resurrection, and the movements of the heavens, as indicated in Al-An'am 6:2 and Al-A'raf 7:187. While angels may be informed of a person's death, the exact time of the Last Day remains unseen by all An-Nazi'at 79:42-44.
Second are legislated terms that Allah made known to humanity to govern their worship and legal affairs, such as waiting periods and commercial deadlines Al-Hajj 22:33. Third are mutual deadlines that people establish among themselves through voluntary agreements Al-Qasas 28:27-28.
Within divine decree, scholars discuss the erasing and confirming mentioned in Ar-Ra'd 13:38-39. As explained by scholars like Ibn Taymiyyah, changes occur within the scrolls of the angels, where an lifespan might increase through keeping family ties or supplication, while Allah's eternal knowledge never changes. Allah concealed your final hour so you remain constantly alert, avoiding procrastination and ensuring that death finds you in full submission to Him Ali 'Imran 3:102.
«ارتبطت الآجال التي قدرها الله تعالى ارتباطًا وثيقًا بقدر الله في هذا الكون، فبعضها قد استأثر الله بعلمه وبعضها قد عرفه لخلقه وبعضها قد وضعه البشر مواقيت بينهم، وكل ذلك بحكمة الله وعلمه وتقديره وأسرار حكمته وتشريعه.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

The appointed term of humans
From the paper: «
Human existence is framed by exact divine milestones from the first spark of creation to the grave. Allah urges reflection on how human life unfolds through fixed stages, from clay and fluid to infancy, mature strength, and old age, until each individual reaches their decreed term Ar-Rum 30:8 and Ghafir 40:67.
This begins in the womb, where the embryo dwells for a determined period Al-Hajj 22:5. A hadith relates that after forty-two nights, an angel is dispatched to shape the faculties and record the child's sustenance, gender, actions, and lifespan. Modern embryology mirrors these Quranic descriptions of early anatomical formation.
Your entire earthly life is bounded by an unalterable limit. No soul can pass away except by Allah's leave at a predetermined time Ali 'Imran 3:145. Because death brings dread and the wish for delay, the Quran underscores that when the end arrives, it cannot be postponed even for a brief moment Al-Munafiqun 63:11. When people witness the signs of death, they yearn for a little more time to give charity and act righteously Al-Munafiqun 63:10, driving home the urgent need to outpace your appointed term with good deeds today.

The appointed term of nations
From the paper: «
Just like individuals, communities and civilizations have an appointed term recorded in the Preserved Tablet. When a nation's collective lifespan reaches its end, it cannot delay its fate by a single hour, nor can it hasten it Al-A'raf 7:34 and Yunus 10:49.
Nations may naturally fade away as generations pass, or they may be eradicated by divine punishment due to persistent injustice and rejection of the truth Al-Hijr 15:4-5. The story of Pharaoh exemplifies this: repeated tribulations (drought, swarms, and floods) were lifted for temporary reprieves until the final, inescapable deadline of their drowning arrived Al-A'raf 7:130-136. Multiple warnings do not mean punishment is canceled; they are mercy giving room to repent.
Human arrogance often mocks this delay, challenging the prophets to hasten the punishment Al-Ankabut 29:53. However, Allah's mercy governs the cosmic system: if He were to take people to task immediately for their oppression, no living creature would remain upon the earth An-Nahl 16:61. He delays retribution until a fixed term so that life may continue, the system of the world remains intact, and believers recognize His wisdom and gentleness Yunus 10:11.
«يخبر تعالى أنه ما أهلك قريةً إلا بعد قيام الحجة عليها وانتهاء أجلها، وإنه لا يؤخر أمة حان هلاكها عن ميقاتهم ولا يتقدمون عن مدتهم، وهذا تنبيهٌ لأهل مكة وإرشادٌ لهم إلى الإقلاع عما هم عليه من الشرك والعناد والإلحاد الذي يستحقون به الهلاك .»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

The appointed term of the universe
From the paper: «
The cosmos itself is not eternal; it operates under a strict divine timetable. The heavens, the earth, the sun, and the moon are harnessed to run their courses until a decreed term Ar-Ra'd 13:2. The Quran uses subtle prepositions to describe this motion: stating that they run either 'for' an appointed term Fatir 35:13 or 'toward' an appointed term Luqman 31:29. As scholars noted, the phrasing 'toward' invites human contemplation of their ongoing journeys before reaching that ultimate conclusion.
Modern astronomy highlights that our universe is expanding continually from an initial beginning and will eventually reach a boundary of dissolution. The Quran evokes terrifying cosmic shifts: skies cleft open like a red rose or hot molten oil Ar-Rahman 55:37, stars scattering, and the sun wrapped up in darkness. The orderly laws that govern the stars will one day cease when their designated lifetime expires, ushering in the Day of Resurrection.

The appointed term in worship and transactions
From the paper: «
Islamic jurisprudence defines an appointed term as a future period to which an obligation is attached, either to fulfill it or to conclude it. These terms are either legislated by divine law for acts of worship or agreed upon mutually in financial and social contracts.
In personal status, legislated terms protect rights, lineage, and emotional sanctity. The Quran establishes waiting periods for the widow Al-Baqarah 2:234, the divorced woman Al-Baqarah 2:231-232, and the pregnant woman whose term concludes upon giving birth At-Talaq 65:4. These bounded periods prevent impulsive harm, safeguard the womb, and give room for dignified separation or reconciliation. During this period, direct marriage proposals are prohibited to honor the gravity of the transition Al-Baqarah 2:235. Similarly, sacrificial animals during pilgrimage possess designated terms of utility before reaching their sacrifice Al-Hajj 22:32-33.
In financial dealings, the Quran commands that deferred debts and sales be documented with a clearly specified term to eliminate ambiguity and prevent dispute Al-Baqarah 2:282. Jurists agreed that contracts involving deferred performance, such as hiring or advance sales, are invalid if the term is vague, because obscurity invites rancor. The Quran illustrates this principle in Prophet Musa's clearly defined term of labor Al-Qasas 28:26-28.
«وإنما اتفقوا؛ لأن جهالة الأجل تفضي إلى المنازعة في التسلم والتسليم، فهذا يطالبه في قريب المدة، وذاك في بعيدها، وكل ما يفضي إلى المنازعة يجب إغلاق بابه، ولأنه.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

The appointed term in the Hereafter
From the paper: «
The ultimate appointed term, toward which all creation marches, is the Day of Judgment. Allah has set a fixed, doubt-free term for gathering humanity and resurrecting bodies from their graves Al-Isra 17:99 and Hud 11:104. This predetermined hour cannot be altered, and its deferral serves as an act of mercy allowing humanity to worship and repent, especially for the final nation of the Prophet Ta-Ha 20:129.
When this final term arrives, whoever hoped to meet Allah will see their hope realized, for His decree is coming Al-Ankabut 29:5-6. On that Day, the earthly lifespan ends and an eternal existence begins. Humanity will divide into two groups: the wretched in Hellfire and the joyous in Paradise Hud 11:103-108.
The bliss of Paradise is an everlasting gift that will never be cut off, sustained through Allah's eternal grace, while the punishment of the wrongdoers reflects perfect divine justice. At this final boundary, death itself will be ended, leaving every soul in an unending reality determined by what they sent forward during their earthly term.
«وهذا هو أجل الآجال ومنتهى العمر والأعمال، فكل شيء عند الله بمقدار، إليه يرجع الأمر كله، أوله وآخره، علنه وسره، فإن الله سبحانه بواسع علمه وحكيم صنعته جعل لهذه الحياة أجلًا عنده تنقضي، ووقتًا إليه تنتهي، إنه يوم القيامة، يوم البعث والنشور.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Outpace Your Lifespan with Good Deeds
Because the exact date of your death is hidden, never postpone repentance, charity, or obedience. When the appointed hour arrives, no soul is granted even a moment's extension.
Find Calm in Knowing Your Limit Is Set
Your lifespan and worldly provisions were decreed before your birth. Resting in this knowledge frees your heart from panic over worldly hazards and worldly gain.
Respect Deadlines in Business and Agreements
Vague deadlines cause mistrust and conflict. In your debts, work contracts, and mutual promises, define exact dates and honor them with integrity.
Honor Divine Limits in Family Transitions
Whether in marriage, divorce, or grieving a deceased spouse, adhere faithfully to the legislated waiting periods, which safeguard emotional dignity and protect family lineage.
Reflect
- If your worldly term ended tonight, what unresolved matter or delayed repentance would you regret leaving behind?
- How does knowing that the sun, the earth, and entire civilizations have fixed terms change your perspective on temporary worldly crises?
- Are there financial debts, promises, or deadlines in your life right now that suffer from ambiguity and need to be clearly defined?

How it differs from related terms
Lifespan
- Al-Askari noted that al-ajal is the unchangeable end point of a lifespan decreed in Allah's eternal knowledge, whereas al-'umr refers to the actual duration of life that builds the body and can experience increase or decrease in the scrolls.
Time limit
- Al-waqt is a bounded amount of time set for an action; every waqt can be considered an ajal when it marks the conclusion of work, but not every ajal is called a waqt since waqt specifically designates a measured portion of time.
Time span
- Al-muddah signifies the continuous extension and flow of a time interval from its start to its end, while al-ajal refers specifically to the established terminal boundary marking the end of that span.
