At a glance
Prophet Zechariah (زكريا عليه السلام) stands in the Quran as an inspiring model of sincere prayer, quiet devotion, and complete trust in the limitless generosity of Allah. A righteous prophet from the Children of Israel who earned his living as a carpenter, he took on the noble guardianship of Maryam, watching over her sanctuary and witnessing firsthand miraculous provision sent directly from her Lord.
That remarkable sight stirred Zechariah's heart to call upon his Creator for pure offspring, despite his extreme old age and his wife's barrenness. Driven not by pride or material wealth, but by a selfless desire to ensure the continuity of prophetic guidance and religious leadership, he turned entirely to Allah in a tender, hidden call.
His story across Surah Al 'Imran, Maryam, and Al-Anbiya reveals profound lessons about the power of heartfelt dua, the blessing of constant remembrance, the beauty of righteous parenting, and the boundless majesty of divine power over the worldly means of creation.

Words to know
- زكريا عليه السلام `Zakariyyā `alayhi al-salām`
An Israelite prophet, father of Prophet Yahya, and guardian of Maryam, celebrated in the Quran for his secret supplication, humility, and steadfast calling to Allah.
Introduction to Prophet Zechariah
From the paper: «التعريف بزكريا عليه السلام»
The prophet Zechariah was a messenger sent to the Children of Israel, descending from the lineage of Jacob Maryam 19:6 and Solomon, the son of David Al-An'am 6:84-85. A hadith reports that he earned his livelihood as a humble carpenter.
Zechariah lived in the era immediately preceding the birth of Isa. He was present at the birth of Maryam, took her under his protective care, and late in life was granted a son, Yahya Ali 'Imran 3:37.
Scholars have two main opinions regarding his kinship to Maryam and Isa: either he was married to Maryam's sister, or he was married to her maternal aunt. Ibn Kathir notes that the majority view, aligned with narrations describing Yahya and Isa as maternal cousins, holds that Zechariah's wife, Ishya', was the sister of Maryam.
Zechariah's death was tragic: he was murdered as a result of incitement by the killers of his son Yahya, part of the grievous crime of killing prophets condemned in the Quran Ali 'Imran 3:112, Ali 'Imran 3:181. In the Quran, Zechariah is mentioned by name seven times across four surahs, and his inspiring narrative is detailed across Surah Al 'Imran, Maryam, and Al-Anbiya.
Zechariah's guardianship of Mary
From the paper: «كفالة زكريا لمريم عليهما السلام»
The story of Zechariah begins in Surah Al 'Imran with a noble deed: undertaking the guardianship of the orphaned Maryam, whom Allah accepted and caused to grow in purity Ali 'Imran 3:37. When Maryam's father, 'Imran, passed away before she was born, the religious leaders competed fiercely for the honor of caring for their teacher's daughter. Because their dispute could not be resolved, they agreed to cast lots by throwing their pens into flowing water. Zechariah's pen rose against the current while all the others sank downstream, confirming Allah's choice of him as her guardian.
Zechariah dedicated a secluded prayer chamber (mihrāb) in Bayt al-Maqdis for Maryam, shielding her from intermingling so she could worship Allah with an undivided heart. Yet whenever he entered upon her, he found sustenance that he had not provided and that was completely out of season, such as summer fruits in winter and winter fruits in summer Ali 'Imran 3:37.
Astonished, he asked where it came from. Maryam replied that it was from Allah, who provides without measure. This extraordinary provision was an honoring miracle (karāmah) preparing Maryam for the miraculous birth to come, and reminding Zechariah of Allah's unlimited bounty At-Talaq 65:3.
Zechariah's prayer for a child
From the paper: «سؤال زكريا عليه السلام الولد»
Witnessing the out-of-season fruit in Maryam's sanctuary ignited Zechariah's longing. Right there, in the place of prayer, he called upon Allah to grant him pure offspring Ali 'Imran 3:38, Maryam 19:2-6, Al-Anbiya 21:89. He called in a secret whisper, an intimate manner of dua that reflects true sincerity, brokenness, and awareness that Allah hears every breath.
Zechariah acknowledged his physical vulnerability: his bones had weakened, his hair was ablaze with white, and his wife had been barren since youth Maryam 19:4-5. Yet he pleaded on the basis of Allah's past generosity: he had never been disappointed in calling upon Him. His desire was purely spiritual: he feared that after his death, no qualified kin would guide the people, so he sought an heir to carry forward prophetic knowledge and righteous guidance Maryam 19:5-6.
While he was standing in prayer, angels brought him glad tidings of Yahya, a masterly, chaste prophet endowed with an unprecedented name Ali 'Imran 3:39, Maryam 19:7, Al-Anbiya 21:90. Overcome with awe, Zechariah wondered how this could unfold in their extreme old age Ali 'Imran 3:40, Maryam 19:8. The divine answer came: it is entirely effortless for the Creator who brought Zechariah himself into existence from nothing Maryam 19:9.
To know the moment of conception so he could hasten to offer gratitude, Zechariah asked for a sign. Allah withheld his tongue from speaking to people for three days while keeping it perfectly capable of praise and glorification, directing him to remember Allah abundantly morning and evening Ali 'Imran 3:41, Maryam 19:10-11.
The family of Zechariah
From the paper: «عائلة زكريا عليه السلام»
The household of Zechariah shines as an exemplar of faith, mutual support, and devotion. Zechariah himself stemmed from an illustrious prophetic lineage. His wife was a patient, righteous woman who endured the trial of barrenness with contentment, joining her husband in worshipping their Lord.
Allah answered Zechariah's prayer, curing his wife by restoring her ability to conceive after lifelong infertility, while increasing her piety and religious devotion. The Quran commends the entire family, affirming that they used to hasten to good works, call upon Allah in hope and awe, and remain genuinely humble before Him Al-Anbiya 21:89-90.
Their son, Prophet Yahya, was raised in an environment of continuous obedience. Bestowed with judgment, wisdom, and understanding of the Scripture while still a young boy, he was commanded to take the Torah with firm resolve Maryam 19:12. Allah endowed Yahya with profound tenderness (hanān), moral purity (zakāh), devout obedience, and dutifulness to his parents, keeping him completely free of arrogance and rebellion Ali 'Imran 3:39, Maryam 19:13-15. Peace was divinely conferred upon Yahya across every stage of human vulnerability: the day of his birth, the day of his death, and the day of his resurrection.
Lessons learned from his story
From the paper: «الدروس المستفادة من قصته عليه السلام»
Zechariah's story offers timeless guidance for the believer's personal and spiritual life:
- Caring for orphans and casting lots: The scholars' race to foster Maryam underscores the virtue of orphan sponsorship. When worthy individuals share an equal claim to a virtuous duty, casting lots (qur'ah) is a legitimate Islamic tool to ensure fairness Ali 'Imran 3:44.
- Honoring the miracles of the righteous: Maryam's unseasonal sustenance establishes that Allah grants miracles (karāmāt) to pious servants who do not claim prophecy Ali 'Imran 3:37.
- Etiquette of dua: Zechariah exemplifies praying in secret, which enhances humility, prevents distraction, and signals closeness to Allah. Believers should also plead through Allah's past generosity and choose blessed times and places.
- Fostering righteous children: Loving children is a natural human inclination Al-Kahf 18:46, Ash-Shura 42:49-50, An-Nahl 16:72, As-Saffat 37:100-101, As-Saffat 37:112. Zechariah focused his petition on moral integrity rather than worldly status.
- Steadfastness in remembrance and calling: Even when physically prevented from speaking to people, Zechariah was ordered to maintain abundant dhikr Ali 'Imran 3:41, Al-Anfal 8:45, and he creatively used gestures to direct his people to glorify Allah Maryam 19:11.
- Absolute divine power: Medical limits cannot constrain Allah's will. Human causes operate entirely under His sovereign decree.
Takeaways
Whisper your deepest needs to Allah in secret
Zechariah's quiet supplication shows that lowering your voice in prayer protects your sincerity, calms your heart, and reflects true humility before the All-Hearing Lord.
Use past blessings as a bridge of hope
When facing seemingly impossible difficulties, remind yourself how Allah has answered your prayers before, using His past kindness to fuel your present certainty.
Pray for your children's faith, not just their comfort
Zechariah asked for an heir who would inherit righteous guidance, wisdom, and pleasing character, reminding parents to prioritize their children's spiritual legacy above worldly status.
Never abandon your duty to remind others
When his tongue was held from speaking to people, Zechariah used gestures to encourage his community to glorify Allah, showing that a believer finds any available way to do good.
Cultivate a household that races toward virtue
The Quran praises Zechariah's family because they rushed to good deeds, balanced hope with healthy fear of Allah, and maintained humble hearts during times of ease and trial.
Reflect
- What impossible difficulty in your life have you hesitated to pray for because worldly reasons seem stacked against you?
- How can you make your private supplications more intimate, quiet, and sincere, following the example of Zechariah's hidden prayer?
- When you think about the legacy you leave behind for loved ones, does it focus more on material comfort or on spiritual integrity?
