At a glance
The soul (الرُّوح al-ruh) is the unseen reality by which human bodies live, move, think, and perceive. Although every person experiences its effects every second, its inner essence remains one of the greatest mysteries of creation, an exclusive secret whose full knowledge Allah has kept to Himself. In the Quran, the word ruh reaches far beyond biological vitality: it names the Archangel Jibril, divine revelation, inner mercy and support, and the miraculous creation of Prophet Isa.
Contemplating the soul shifts your perspective from the temporary physical container to the enduring spiritual reality within. Allah honored humanity by attributing the breathing of the soul to Himself as an act of divine ennoblement. This profound link reminds you that while the body belongs to dust, the spirit belongs to an elevated realm.
Ultimately, the soul is the core entity that tastes comfort or torment in the intermediate realm of the grave (barzakh) and stands before Allah in the Hereafter. Recognizing the reality of your soul urges you to nurture it with faith, obedience, and divine revelation rather than obsessing solely over bodily comforts.

Attributing the spirit to Allah Almighty
From the paper: «إسناد الروح إلى الله تعالى»
Throughout the Quran, Allah attributes the soul directly to Himself. When people questioned the Prophet about it, Allah commanded him to proclaim that the soul belongs to the affair and command of his Lord, and that humanity has been granted but little knowledge Al-Isra 17:85. This attribution appears prominently when describing the creation of Adam, where Allah perfected him and breathed into him of His soul Al-Hijr 15:28-29, Sad 38:71-72, as well as in the fashioned creation of humanity with hearing, sight, and hearts As-Sajdah 32:9.
Scholars explain that attributing the soul to Allah signifies profound meanings:
- Divine Sovereignty: The soul is a created reality that comes into being entirely by Allah's decree and will, just as His general command brings about existence An-Nahl 16:1-2, Hud 11:101, An-Nahl 16:77, Al-Qamar 54:50.
- Ennoblement (تَشْرِيف tashrif): Like "the House of Allah" or "the she-camel of Allah," attributing the soul to Him honors the soul and mankind. It is an attribution of creation and ownership, not a divine part or fragment.
- Human Incapacity: Concealing the soul's nature highlights the limits of human reason. If humans cannot comprehend the created spirit within their own chests, they must recognize their total inability to encompass the majestic Creator.
This attribution also extends to the miraculous conception of Isa through Maryam Maryam 19:17, Al-Anbiya 21:91, At-Tahrim 66:12, An-Nisa 4:171, to divine relief and mercy Yusuf 12:87, and to the inner spiritual strength Allah grants faithful hearts Al-Mujadilah 58:22.

The reality of the spirit and its attributes
From the paper: «حقيقة الروح وصفاتها»
When asked about the ultimate reality of the soul Al-Isra 17:85, the majority of early scholars held that we should refrain from speculative philosophy, because Allah kept its hidden nature to Himself. Others described it as a subtle, luminous, heavenly body that flows through physical limbs the way water flows through a rose or fire through coal, imparting life so long as the body is receptive.
Scripture details specific, real attributes of the human soul. The Prophet stated that souls are like assembled armies: those that recognize one another harmonize, while those that do not disagree. Furthermore, authentic texts show that the soul acts, moves, and experiences:
- It ascends, descends, hears, sees, and speaks, possessing functions distinct from the physical flesh.
- It is addressed at death, departing either gently or forcefully Al-An'am 6:93.
- It is commanded to return to its Lord when tranquil, entering Paradise among righteous servants Al-Fajr 89:27-30.
- It is fashioned and balanced by Allah, receiving the innate awareness of both moral corruption and righteousness Ash-Shams 91:7-8, just as the physical body was fashioned Al-Infitar 82:7.
Thus, the soul is an actual, enduring essence rather than a mere temporary accident, capable of being either pure or corrupt.

Entities described as the spirit in the Quran
From the paper: «الموصفون بالروح في القرآن»
The Quran uses the term ruh in several elevated contexts beyond biological life:
- Archangel Jibril: He is named the Trustworthy Spirit who brought revelation upon the Prophet's heart Ash-Shu'ara 26:193-194, the Holy Spirit (ruh al-qudus) who purified Isa and supported him Al-Baqarah 2:87, Al-Ma'idah 5:110, An-Nahl 16:102, and the Spirit who descends alongside angels on the Night of Decree Al-Qadr 97:4 and stands on the Day of Judgment An-Naba 78:38.
- Divine Mercy: Relief and comfort are termed rawh or ruh, reminding believers never to despair of Allah's mercy Yusuf 12:87, Al-Mujadilah 58:22.
- Revelation: Scripture is called spirit because just as the physical spirit gives life to the body, divine revelation brings genuine life, knowledge, and light to human hearts Ghafir 40:15, An-Nahl 16:2, Ash-Shura 42:52.
- Prophet Isa: Named a spirit from Allah An-Nisa 4:171, honors his extraordinary creation through Jibril's breath without a human father and his role in reviving hearts.
- Divine Support: The inner certainty, steadfastness, and victory granted to believers against falsehood is termed a spirit from Him Al-Mujadilah 58:22.
- The Human Soul: The vital breath breathed into Adam Al-Hijr 15:29 that forms the unseen engine of human thought, awareness, and life Al-Isra 17:85, turning earthly dust into an honored servant preparing for the true life of the Hereafter Al-Ankabut 29:64.

The bliss and torment of the spirit
From the paper: «نعيم الروح وعذابها»
The human soul is the primary element that tastes conscious bliss or torment. At death, it separates from the flesh yet remains aware, entering the intermediate world of the grave (barzakh) Al-Mu'minun 23:100.
For righteous souls, angels arrive with radiant faces, sweet perfumes, and garments from Paradise. The soul slips out smoothly like a drop from a waterskin, receives the glad tidings of Allah's pleasure, and journeys through the heavens where gates swing open in welcome. In the grave, after answering the questions of faith truthfully, a door to Paradise opens, granting it pleasant scent and expansive peace, joined by its righteous deeds in beautiful form. In the Hereafter, its ultimate bliss is gazing upon Allah and being near Him.
Conversely, the wicked soul suffers terrors from the moment of death, when angels strike it and extract it violently like a barbed iron skewer through wet wool Al-An'am 6:93. The gates of heaven remain locked against it Al-A'raf 7:40, and it is cast down into ruin Al-Hajj 22:31. In the grave, it faces crushing confinement and intense heat. The Quran points directly to intermediate torment before the final Day: Pharaoh's people are exposed to fire morning and evening prior to the Hour Ghafir 40:45-46, wrongdoers face punishment before the greater torment At-Tur 52:45-47, and distinct fates are assigned at the throat Al-Waqi'ah 56:83-94. Being veiled from Allah remains the greatest spiritual agony Al-Mutaffifin 83:15-16, Ibrahim 14:16-17.

Takeaways
Acknowledge the boundaries of your knowledge
When Allah kept the precise essence of the soul hidden Al-Isra 17:85, He taught you intellectual humility. Direct your mental energy toward what benefits your faith and actions rather than exhausting yourself over unseen matters Allah intentionally veiled.
Nourish your inner soul, not just your outer body
Your physical body was formed from clay, but your spirit received life through a special divine breath Al-Hijr 15:29. Feeding the body while neglecting the soul withers your true self; real spiritual vitality comes from soaking your heart in revelation Ash-Shura 42:52.
Never despair of divine relief and mercy
The Quran identifies divine relief and comfort as Allah's spirit (rawh) Yusuf 12:87. No matter how narrow or dark your worldly circumstances appear, remember that despair is alien to faith and that Allah's gentle relief is always near.
Prepare your soul for its inevitable journey
Death is not an absolute end, but the soul's transition into the realm of the grave Al-Mu'minun 23:100. Live every day nurturing good deeds so that when your time arrives, your soul departs smoothly and is welcomed with joy, fragrance, and peace.
Reflect
- How much daily attention and care do you give to feeding your soul compared to maintaining your physical body?
- When faced with difficult trials, how can remembering Allah's vast mercy (rawh) protect your heart from falling into despair?
- If your soul were called to depart today, what kind of companion would your accumulated deeds provide in the grave?
- How does knowing that revelation is described as 'spirit' change the way you engage with reading and listening to the Quran?

How it differs from related terms
- النفس The Self / Soul
- While often used interchangeably with the soul (ruh), scholars note that nafs typically designates the soul as it connects to the body, intellect, and personal desires, whereas ruh specifically denotes the vital spark of life and spiritual origin.
- الحياة Life
- Life is an accident or state representing movement and perception that departs from lifeless inanimate stillness, whereas the soul (ruh) is the actual subtle body and created cause that brings about this living state.
