At a glance

The Quran uses the concept of seizing (al-akhdh) to capture two profound realities of divine power: Allah's absolute hold over all creation, and His decisive punishment when tyrants cross every limit. At its core, the word means to take hold of, gather, or acquire something, whether through gentle receipt or overpowering force. Unlike human control, Allah's grasp is boundless and constant. He is exalted above even a moment of drowsiness or sleep, holding the forelocks of every living creature in absolute sovereignty.

Yet, this immense power is governed by perfect justice and mercy. Allah does not seize people arbitrarily. He establishes covenants, plants the knowledge of His oneness in human nature, sends messengers, and grants respite to wrongdoers so they might repent. He explicitly overlooks involuntary mistakes, forgotten duties, and passing slips of the tongue, holding people accountable only for what their hearts resolve.

When persistent oppressors reject every warning, however, divine seizing arrives as a painful, inescapable reckoning. From Pharaoh to ancient nations like Ad and Thamud, the Quran recounts how persistent tyranny is ultimately broken by an Almighty, All-Powerful Sovereign.

Key verses

  1. Al-Baqarah 2:225: Allah makes clear that He does not hold believers accountable for casual, unintended oaths, but holds them responsible only for what their hearts deliberately intend and resolve.
  2. Al-Baqarah 2:286: This verse teaches believers to plead for divine pardoning regarding what occurs out of forgetfulness or unintended error, highlighting that Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity.
  3. Hud 11:102: This verse warns that when Allah seizes oppressive communities, His punishment is excruciatingly painful and severe, leaving no room for wrongdoers to feel safe in their temporary delay.

Words to know

الأَخْذ al-akhdh

To take hold of, gather, or acquire something by gentle receipt or overpowering force, used in the Quran to signify divine punishment, covenants, and absolute control.

Appears 273 times in the Quran.

Most common forms: أَخَذَ (127), اتَّخَذَ (124), يُؤاخِذُ (9), أَخْذ (6), آخِذ (3)

Root: ا خ ذ

الاتِّخَاذ al-ittikhadh

Taking something for a continuous, ongoing purpose, such as adopting a house as a dwelling or a riding beast for regular travel.

Root: ا خ ذ

التَّنَاوُل al-tanawul

Reaching out to take a specific, intended small portion, unlike general seizing which can occur without deliberate intent.

البَطْش al-batsh

A form of seizing characterized specifically by intense violence, overpowering dominance, and extreme force during an assault.

Root: ب ط ش

الإِهْلَاك al-ihlak

Causing total collapse, destruction, or complete depletion, marking the end of those who persist in falsehood and injustice.

Exalting Allah above drowsiness and sleep

From the paper: «أولًا: تنزيه الله عن السِنَة والنوم»

The Quran establishes Allah's absolute perfection by negating any form of fatigue or neglect from His divine being. In Ayat al-Kursi, Allah explicitly states that neither drowsiness (sinah) nor sleep can seize Him Al-Baqarah 2:255. Sleep is an involuntary state of weakness and deficit necessary for created beings to recover their strength, but it is utterly impossible for the Ever-Living, Self-Sustaining Sustainer (al-Hayy al-Qayyum).

The choice of the verb "seize" (ta'khudhuhu) is particularly profound: sleep overpowers and dominates creatures against their will, whereas Allah can never be conquered or overtaken by any weakness. The paper notes that negating such flaws inherently affirms Allah's boundless life, everlasting management of the cosmos, and all-encompassing knowledge.

Were sleep or even a moment of drowsiness to overtake the Creator, the heavens, the earth, and all existence would collapse, as their sustained order relies entirely upon His constant care and power. He is the witness over every soul and what it earns, watching over creation without a single moment of heedlessness.

Taking the covenant

From the paper: «ثانيًا: أخذ الميثاق»

Divine seizing also manifests in the solemn covenants (mithaq) Allah established with humanity and His prophets, as well as His total hold over all living things.

  • Covenant with the Prophets: Allah bound all messengers with a solemn pledge to believe in, confirm, and aid each subsequent messenger He would send, making them witnesses over one another Ali 'Imran 3:81. A weighty covenant was taken especially from the prophets of resolve Al-Ahzab 33:7.
  • Covenant with Humanity: Before earthly life began, Allah extracted Adam's offspring and made them testify to His sole Lordship so that no soul could plead ignorance or heedlessness on the Day of Resurrection Al-A'raf 7:172. This innate knowledge of divine oneness is embedded deep within human nature.
  • Covenants with the People of the Book: Allah bound previous communities to clarify His revelation, uphold moral duties, protect human life, and avoid bloodshed 2:83-84}, {3:187. Breaking these pledges led to discord, bitter enmity, and deprivation of guidance Al-Ma'idah 5:14.

Furthermore, Allah holds every creature by its forelock Hud 11:56. The Arabs used this expression to denote total submission: every living being is completely subject to Allah's decree, justice, and overwhelming power.

Allah's way of seizing

From the paper: «سُنة الله في الأخذ»

Allah's way of calling servants to account reflects perfect justice, immense forbearance, and mercy. He does not punish indiscriminately, but according to clear principles:

  • Intent of the Heart: Accountability rests upon what the heart deliberately resolves and earns Al-Baqarah 2:225. Therefore, binding oaths intentionally sworn require expiation if broken Al-Ma'idah 5:89, whereas casual oaths spoken out of habit are pardoned 2:225}, {5:89.
  • Establishment of Proof: Allah never punishes any people until He sends a messenger and establishes undeniable evidence, cutting off all valid excuses 4:115}, {17:15. When someone is coerced by torture while the heart remains firm in faith, Allah does not hold them accountable An-Nahl 16:106-109.
  • Involuntary Slips Pardoned: Sincere believers are taught to pray that Allah does not take them to task for unintended mistakes or forgetfulness Al-Baqarah 2:286.
  • Respite and Appointed Terms: If Allah were to immediately seize humanity for their sins, not a single creature would remain on earth; instead, He delays them to an appointed term 16:61}, {18:58}, {35:45. This forbearance allows wrongdoers time to repent before justice arrives.

Seizing the wrongdoers and the affluent

From the paper: «أخذ الظالمين والمترفين»

When arrogant oppressors reject every warning and persist in tyranny, Allah's seizing strikes them decisively in this world and the next.

The Quran details historical examples of tyrants who were seized for their sins:

  • Pharaoh and his hosts were drowned in the sea after suffering years of drought and crop failure 3:11}, {7:130}, {17:103}, {28:40.
  • Thamud preferred blindness over guidance and were seized by the blast and thunderbolt of humiliating punishment 11:67}, {41:17.
  • Ad were demolished by a furious, freezing wind that blew for seven nights and eight days 51:41}, {54:19}, {69:6-8.
  • The people of Lot were upended and pelted with marked stones Al-Hijr 15:58-74.
  • The communities of Noah, Shuayb, and the rebellious companions of Moses were seized by floods, tremors, and lightning 2:55}, {4:153}, {7:78}, {7:91}, {11:94}, {29:14}, {40:5}, {51:44.

In the Hereafter, opulent transgressors who reveled in luxury will cry out in agony Al-Mu'minun 23:64, seized by the forelocks and feet Ar-Rahman 55:41, and bound in heavy chains Al-Haqqah 69:30-32. The Quran describes this divine seizing as ruinous Al-Muzzammil 73:16, escalating in intensity Al-Haqqah 69:10, excruciatingly painful Hud 11:102, and executed with the overwhelming might of the Almighty, All-Capable Sovereign Al-Qamar 54:42.

Takeaways

  1. Guard your heart and speech

Allah judges you by what your heart intends and settles upon, not by passing thoughts, idle slips of the tongue, or accidental mistakes. Respect Allah's name by keeping sworn pledges and avoiding reckless oaths.

  2. Never mistake divine delay for divine neglect

If wrongdoers seem to prosper, know that Allah grants respite out of forbearance and wisdom, giving people time to turn back in repentance before their appointed term expires.

  3. Draw courage from Allah's sovereignty

Every oppressor and hostile force on earth is merely a creature whose forelock is in Allah's hand. When you hold firm to the truth, trust that no worldly power can escape His justice.

Reflect

  • Knowing that Allah holds all living creatures by their forelocks, how can this reality bring peace to your heart when facing worldly intimidation or anxiety?
  • When you commit an unintended mistake or lapse into forgetfulness, how does knowing Allah's merciful principles of accountability shape your prayer and hope?
  • How do you view worldly wealth and ease in light of the Quran's warnings about the opulent who ignored divine guidance?

Linguistic meaning

Linguistically, the root al-akhdh signifies gathering, acquiring, and taking hold of something, whether through gentle manual receipt or through overpowering force, and it stands as the direct opposite of giving (al-ata).

«الهمزة والخاء والذال أصل واحد تتفرَع منه فروعٌ متقاربة في المعنى، فالأصل حَوْز الشيء وجبْيُه وجمعه وتحصيله، وذلك تارةً بالتناول، وتارةً بالقهر، وهو خِلَافُ الْعَطَاءِ.»

Technical meaning

In Quranic terminology, al-akhdh refers to the descent of punishment, destruction, and uprooting upon communities due to polytheism, denial of signs, rejection of messengers, and severe injustice, as well as denoting Allah's absolute containment and overpowering dominion over creation.

«ومن معاني الأخذ: وقوع العذاب والإهلاك والاستئصال والعقوبة نتيجة الشرك بالله تعالى، وجحود آياته، وتكذيب رسله، ونتيجة الظلم الشديد.»

How it differs from related terms

الاتخاذ Continuous Adoption
While al-akhdh can mean obtaining or punishing in a specific instance, al-ittikhadh carries an added element of persistence, referring to taking something for an enduring, continuous purpose, such as adopting a house as a permanent residence.
التناول Targeted Taking
Al-tanawul refers strictly to taking a small, deliberately intended portion and cannot be applied to accidental actions, whereas al-akhdh can occur both intentionally and unintentionally.
البطش Violent Assault
Al-batsh is a specific form of seizing executed solely through overwhelming physical power, violence, and intense domination, while al-akhdh can happen either with extreme force or gently without violence.
الإهلاك Total Destruction
Al-ihlak emphasizes the state of complete ruin, expiration, and total depletion of a thing, sharing with al-akhdh the reality of eradicating punishment when invoked against persistent oppressors and deniers.
