At a glance
The Quran frequently draws your attention to the vast universe around you: the celestial bodies moving in precise orbits, the earth made stable and fertile, the seas bearing heavy ships, and the animals humbled to your service. In Quranic language, this is termed التسخير al-taskhir, which means Allah's subduing and making things subservient to a specific designated purpose by His divine will and power.
Far from being a mere mechanical setting, this subjugation is a profound sign of divine grace and power. Allah subdued these immense creations for human beings, despite human fragility, guiding mankind to uncover their laws and utilize them. This cosmic order serves as a compelling proof of Allah's oneness, His majestic attributes, and His ability to resurrect the dead.
Recognizing this gift transforms how you interact with creation. It calls you to an attitude of constant gratitude and awe, reminding you never to let blessings intoxicate you with pride. Instead, believers are encouraged to harness these resources diligently, actively cultivating the earth through industry, trade, and knowledge in fulfilling their earthly trust.
Key verses
- Ibrahim 14:33: Allah highlights His subjugation of the sun, moon, night, and day in continuous, orderly motion to sustain life and serve human benefit.
- Ar-Ra'd 13:2: The precise, appointed movements of the sun and moon demonstrate the Creator's supreme control, proving His power to resurrect mankind for the ultimate meeting.
- Al-Mulk 67:15: Allah made the earth smooth and subservient for you, inviting you to travel its paths, seek His sustenance, and actively develop its resources.
- Ya-Sin 36:72: Allah subdued livestock for humanity, removing their wild resistance so they can provide riding, food, drink, and manifold daily necessities.
- Al-Jathiyah 45:13: All that is in the heavens and the earth has been made subservient as a collective grace from Allah, demanding deep contemplation and thankfulness.
- Az-Zukhruf 43:12: Allah created all species and provided ships and livestock as mounts, teaching believers to recognize their own inherent weakness and proclaim His glory.

Theological implications of subservience
From the paper: «
The subjugation of the universe provides undeniable evidence for the foundational truths of Islamic creed.
First, it points directly to divine Lordship and Oneness (Tawhid). When Allah describes subduing the night, day, sun, moon, and stars An-Nahl 16:12, He directs rational minds to understand that the sole Master, Creator, and Sustainer of these immense entities is the only One deserving of worship Al-A'raf 7:54. The seamless harmony and unified laws governing celestial movements exclude every notion of a partner or offspring Az-Zumar 39:5.
Second, it reveals Allah's glorious names and perfect attributes. Subduing the heavens and the earth proves the execution of His will and supreme power Al-Jathiyah 45:12-13. The delicate balance of natural forces, such as gravity and wind that allow ships to float, reflects His consummate wisdom, vast knowledge, and encompassing mercy toward mankind.
Third, cosmic subservience demonstrates Allah's power to resurrect the dead. In verses like Ar-Ra'd 13:2, Allah notes that celestial bodies run their courses for an appointed term. The One who raised the heavens without pillars and governs the tireless orbit of the sun and moon is fully capable of restoring life, gathering humanity, and executing the final reckoning Az-Zumar 39:5.
«فقد بين سبحانه أن هذا الكون وكل ما فيه من الخيرات الكثيرة والنعم العظيمة، وهذه الصفات الدالة على كمال قدرته، دليل على قدرته في البعث والإعادة، فخلق السماوات والأرض، وتسخير الشمس والقمر؛ هو تذليلهما للعمل على ما جعل الله لهما من نظام السير، سير المتبوع والتابع.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Manifestations of subservience
From the paper: «
Allah's subservience manifests across diverse realms of existence, designed entirely for the welfare of human beings.
- The Sun and Celestial Bodies: The sun and moon run continuously Ibrahim 14:33, providing light, warmth, the calculation of time, and the seasonal cycles vital for plant and animal survival Yunus 10:5, Al-Isra 17:12.
- The Earth: Allah prepared the earth as a subdued habitat, anchoring it with mountains and yielding water, crops, and mineral wealth Al-Mulk 67:15, An-Nazi'at 79:30-33, Abasa 80:27-32.
- The Sea: The oceans are made accessible for travel, providing a renewable source of fresh seafood and valuable adornments like pearls and coral An-Nahl 16:14.
- Mounts and Transport: Livestock and ships are tamed for human conveyance Az-Zukhruf 43:12-13. Allah equipped humanity with intellect to invent ships, cars, and airplanes, while stripping large livestock of their wild resistance so they obey man Ya-Sin 36:71-73.
- Human Interdependence: Allah elevated some people over others in worldly gifts, talents, and resources Az-Zukhruf 43:31-32. This disparity is not for oppression, but ensures that human beings serve and rely upon one another, maintaining societal order and mutual prosperity.
«يحظى من رعاية الله سبحانه بالقسط الوافر، الذي يتيح له أن يسخر هذه الخلائق الكونية الهائلة، وينتفع بها على شتى الوجوه، وذلك بالاهتداء إلى سنن الكون الإلهي الذي يحكمها، والذي تسير وفقه ولا تعصاه!»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Spiritual effects of subservience on the servant
From the paper: «
Experiencing the benefits of subservience should nurture profound spiritual states within your heart.
First, it inspires deep, proactive gratitude (shukr). When you consider how Allah subdued the seas for transport and the livestock for nourishment Al-Jathiyah 45:12, Ya-Sin 36:71-73, you realize these blessings are granted without any entitlement or recompense. The proper etiquette is to acknowledge the Giver through tongue, heart, and limbs, using His gifts exclusively in His obedience. Denying these blessings leads to loss and hardship Ibrahim 14:7, An-Nahl 16:112.
Second, it fosters sincere glorification (ta'dhim) and humble awe. When riding or embarking upon modern or traditional transportation, the believer recites the Quranic reminder to declare Allah's perfection and admit human inability Az-Zukhruf 43:12-13. Remembering that a fragile human could never tame an enormous camel or sail tumultuous seas by raw bodily power cures the heart of arrogance and pride. Similarly, offering sacrifices during pilgrimage Al-Hajj 22:36-37 trains the soul in piety, showing that the ultimate purpose of subduing creation is to foster devotion, worship, and reverence for Allah.
«وفي الآيات تسخير الله تعالى لهذا الكون دون مقابل يستوجب الشكر، وهذا هو الأدب الواجب في حق المنعم، يوجهنا الله إليه، لنذكره كلما استمتعنا بنعمة من نعمه التي تغمرنا، والتي نتقلب بين أعطافها ثم ننساه.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Effects of subservience on developing the earth
From the paper: «
Cosmic subservience forms the bedrock of human civilization and the stewardship of the earth, yielding both tangible and moral fruits.
On the tangible level, Allah made winds, minerals, and natural elements subservient to human endeavor. The Quran illustrates this through Prophet Sulayman, who was granted control over the wind and molten copper Saba 34:12-13, Sad 38:36-38, and Prophet Dawud, for whom iron was made pliable to craft protective armor Al-Anbiya 21:80, Saba 34:10-11. It also recounts Dhul-Qarnayn building an immense iron barrier to protect people Al-Kahf 18:94-97. Today, this extends to harnessing water and wind for energy, constructing infrastructure, and manufacturing transport vehicles Al-Baqarah 2:164, Az-Zukhruf 43:12.
On the moral and civilizational level, this subservience reflects the special dignity Allah bestowed upon humanity Al-Isra 17:70. Man is tasked with uncovering these latent forces to build a flourishing society. Islamic scholars note that mastering sciences, industries, and craftsmanship is a communal obligation (fard kifayah) for Muslims. Neglecting production leads to dependency on others, whereas active production and honest labor honor prophetic teachings and elevate the community's dignity Al-Mulk 67:15.
«وظهر أثر هذا التسخير في الكون في كل مناحي الحياة، في المعدن والنبات، وفي البر والبحر والهواء، فشيدت ناطحات السحاب، وأقيمت السدود العملاقة لإنتاج الطاقة، وحولت الصحاري إلى مناطق زراعية خصبة، وعمرت المدن الكبيرة.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Acknowledge the True Source of Power
Whenever you board a vehicle or use technology, remember that your physical strength alone could never conquer these forces; it is Allah who subdued them for your benefit Az-Zukhruf 43:13.
Use Blessings in Divine Obedience
True gratitude means utilizing natural resources, sustenance, and tools to obey Allah rather than transgressing His limits Al-Jathiyah 45:12.
Embrace Social Interdependence
Recognize that differences in wealth, status, and abilities are divine wisdom designed so that people serve one another, leaving no room for arrogance Az-Zukhruf 43:32.
Pursue Industrial and Scientific Excellence
Mastering sciences, productive craftsmanship, and technology is an essential responsibility that fulfills the communal obligation of cultivating the earth Al-Mulk 67:15.
Remember the Inevitable Return
The orderly movements and eventual end of subservient celestial bodies should constantly remind you of resurrection and the final standing before Allah Ar-Ra'd 13:2.
Reflect
- When you travel by car, plane, or train, do you pause to remember how helpless you would be without Allah subduing natural laws for your safety?
- How can you transform everyday comforts, like eating seafood or using electricity, into conscious moments of praise and worship?
- In what ways are you using your unique skills and resources to serve others and help cultivate your community?
- Are there worldly blessings in your life that risk making you prideful instead of humble before their real Provider?

How it differs from related terms
Humility and Submission
- It is the opposite of might, signifying yielding, submissiveness, and lowliness, which forms the receptive state of a subdued object.
Subduing and Facilitating
- While taskhir and tadhleel both involve making something compliant and directed toward a purpose, tadhleel can be attributed to both Allah and humans, whereas true universal taskhir belongs solely to Allah.
Compliance and Obedience
- It means yielding and submitting to a directive; taskhir is broader than inqiyad, as it encompasses both direct control over living beings and indirect control over inanimate forces through divine laws and human ingenuity.
Empowerment and Domination
- Both involve compelling an entity to a designated end, but taskhir is used for both beloved and disliked outcomes, whereas tasleet is exclusively used in the context of adverse, disliked, or punitive circumstances.
