Surah Ar-Rahmaan 55:44 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection
سُورَةُ الرَّحۡمَٰن · Medinan · Verse 44 of 78
يَطُوفُونَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ حَمِيمٍ ءَانٍۢ
English: but they will go round between its flames and scalding water.
Bengali: তারা জাহান্নামের অগ্নি ও ফুটন্ত পানির মাঝখানে প্রদক্ষিণ করবে।
Meaning & Reflection
'They will circle between it and scalding, boiling water.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the restless image: no rest, no relief, only movement between the fire and the boiling — one torment fleeing into another. Ask yourself: even in this life I recognise that motion — bouncing between two miseries, escaping one discomfort straight into the next, never landing anywhere at peace. This verse shows that restlessness as the very texture of a life cut off from Him: circling, never settling. It presses me to ask where the true rest is found — because the alternative to His peace is not neutrality, but exactly this exhausting shuttle between one heat and another. Am I already, in smaller ways, circling between fires because I haven't turned toward the One who stills the heart?
Grounded in classical tafsir: Ibn Ashur, al-Saadi, al-Biqa'i.
Reflect with the Five Lenses
Maani's framework for Tadabbur (heart-centred reflection) on Surah Ar-Rahmaan 55:44:
- Wording. Look closely at the specific words and structure. Which word stands out, and why might Allah have chosen it here?
- Quranic Worlds. Place the verse in its context — what is happening around it, and what world does it open up?
- Personal Experience. Ask not just what this means, but what it means TO me and FOR me, right now in my life.
- Connections. How does this verse connect to other verses, to the Sunnah, or to themes across the Quran?
- General Lessons. What timeless lesson or action point can I carry away and live by?
