Surah An-Nas 114:5
سُورَةُ النَّاسِ · Meccan · Verse 5 of 6
ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ
Translation
who whispers into the hearts of people––

Meaning and reflection
'The one who whispers in the chests of mankind.' al-Biqa'i notes the target: the sadr (chest) is the antechamber of the heart, the doorway through which incoming thoughts pass, so the whisper is planted right at the threshold, quiet and repeated, until its meaning arrives without a sound even being heard. That is its danger: it is soft, wordless, and it wears your own voice, so you mistake the suggestion for your own thought. Ask yourself: how many 'my own' thoughts, the self-doubt, the resentment, the 'what's the point', might actually be a whisper planted at the door of my heart? And would naming it as a whisper, rather than as me, loosen its grip?
