Surah Al-Mulk 67:17 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

Meccan · Verse 17 of 30

English: Are you sure that He who is in Heaven will not send a whirlwind to pelt you with stones? You will come to know what My warning means.

Meaning & Reflection

'Or do you feel secure that the One above will not send against you a storm of stones? Then you will know how My warning was.' al-Razi recalls the fate of the people of Lut, struck from the sky. al-Biqa'i notes the escalation — first the earth beneath, now the sky above — hemming false security in from both sides. And the sting: 'then you will know' — but knowledge that arrives with the punishment is knowledge too late to help. Ask yourself: I keep deferring the reckoning with a quiet 'not yet, nothing's happened.' This verse warns that the day I finally 'know' the warning was real may be the day it can no longer save me. What am I postponing that only makes sense to face now?

Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Razi, al-Biqa'i, Ibn Kathir.
