Meaning and reflection
'Devoted and of equal age.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note 'uruban atraba', 'urub', deeply loving and devoted to their companions, and 'atrab', matched in age and harmony. The picture is of love that is mutual, wholehearted, and perfectly suited. Ask yourself: so much of the ache in human relationships is mismatch, uneven love, one heart more invested than the other, devotion that isn't returned in kind. This verse pictures companionship without that imbalance: love fully mutual, perfectly matched. It affirms that my longing for a love that is equal, devoted, and unshadowed is not naive, it is a real longing that God intends to fulfil completely. Where do I feel the ache of unmatched love, and can I hold both the disappointment of this world's imperfect bonds and the promise of a perfected one?
