Surah Ar-Rahmaan 55:56 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

فِيهِنَّ قَٰصِرَٰتُ ٱلطَّرْفِ لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ إِنسٌۭ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّۭ

English: There will be maidens restraining their glances, untouched beforehand by man or jinn.

Bengali: তথায় থাকবে আনতনয়ন রমনীগন, কোন জিন ও মানব পূর্বে যাদের ব্যবহার করেনি।

Meaning & Reflection

'In them are companions of modest, restrained gaze, untouched before them by man or jinn.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the defining trait named first is not appearance but character — 'qasirat at-tarf', those whose gaze is lowered and reserved, given wholly to their companion. Ask yourself: notice that the quality the verse praises above beauty is *restraint of the eye* — a heart that is not roving, not divided, not comparing. In a world that trains the gaze to wander endlessly, this verse holds up focused, faithful attention as the honoured thing. What would it mean to value — and cultivate — that same restrained, undistracted heart now: an attention that rests fully where it belongs rather than forever glancing elsewhere?
