Surah Ar-Rahman 55:55

سُورَةُ الرَّحۡمَٰن · Medinan · Verse 55 of 78

فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ

Translation

Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?

English translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem.

Meaning and reflection

'So which of the favours of your Lord will you two deny?' The refrain rests on the promised rest and nearness, the end of striving. al-Saadi notes the favour is the very hope of a place where reaching finally stops. Ask yourself: my whole life can feel like an unending reach, for security, approval, the next accomplishment always just ahead. The image of fruit bending near, of rest without striving, is a mercy precisely because it answers that exhaustion. Which favour will I deny by refusing to believe the reaching ever ends? The refrain keeps offering my tired, grasping self a vision of rest, and asking me not to deny that such rest is real and reachable.

Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Ashur, al-Biqa'i.
