فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ

English: Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?

Meaning & Reflection

'So which of the favours of your Lord will you two deny?' The refrain rests here on the flowing springs — on the promise of a satisfaction that never runs dry. al-Saadi notes that the very existence of such a reward is a favour to yearn toward. Ask yourself: my days are spent chasing refills — the next comfort, the next hit of ease, because the last one drained. The image of an unfailing spring names the deeper ache beneath all that chasing: I want something that will finally not run out. Which favour will I deny by refusing to lift my thirst from the temporary to the eternal? The refrain keeps asking me to notice both the gift and the Giver behind every quenching.
