Surah Al-Baqara 2:5 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

سُورَةُ البَقَرَةِ · Medinan · Verse 5 of 286

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدًۭى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

English: Such people are following their Lord’s guidance and it is they who will prosper.

Bengali: তারাই নিজেদের পালনকর্তার পক্ষ থেকে সুপথ প্রাপ্ত, আর তারাই যথার্থ সফলকাম।

Meaning & Reflection

'Those are upon guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the verdict — 'ala huda min rabbihim': they are on real, God-given guidance, and they, specifically, are 'al-muflihun', the truly successful, the ones who attain what they seek and escape what they fear. Ask yourself: the Qur'an defines success at the very start, before the world can define it for me. Not the wealthy, the powerful, or the admired — but those who believe in the unseen, pray, give, and are certain of the meeting with God. It quietly asks me whose definition of 'success' I am actually living by. If I measured my life against *this* scorecard — faith, prayer, generosity, certainty — rather than the world's, would I count myself among 'the successful', or realise I've been winning a game that doesn't count?

Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Ashur.

  • Quranic Worlds. Place the verse in its context — what is happening around it, and what world does it open up?
  • Personal Experience. Ask not just what this means, but what it means TO me and FOR me, right now in my life.
  • Connections. How does this verse connect to other verses, to the Sunnah, or to themes across the Quran?
  • General Lessons. What timeless lesson or action point can I carry away and live by?
