At a glance
Prophet Salih was an Arab messenger sent by Allah to the ancient tribe of Thamud, who inherited prosperity and skill after the destruction of Ad. Endowed with strength and refined craftsmanship, Thamud carved grand palaces into soft plains for summer and hollowed warm dwellings out of mountains for winter. Before his mission, Salih was esteemed among them for wisdom, upright character, and sound judgment. Yet when he called them to abandon idol worship and devote all devotion purely to Allah, their admiration turned into stubborn opposition.
To vindicate his message, Allah answered their demanding challenge by bringing forth a miraculous she-camel from solid rock. She was not merely a miracle but an active moral test, sharing the valley's water on designated days and demanding their restraint. When Thamud conspired, slaughtered the she-camel, and plotted to murder Salih, divine retribution descended swiftly. His account stands in the Quran as an enduring lesson on divine blessings, communal accountability, and the peril of defying sacred warnings.
Key verses
- Al-A'raf 7:73-74: Salih calls Thamud to single out Allah in worship, reminds them of how they inherited power after Ad with palaces in plains and homes in mountains, and presents the miraculous she-camel as a clear sign never to be harmed.

- Hud 11:61: Salih grounds his call to worship in Allah creating human beings from the earth and settling them to cultivate it, urging sincere repentance to a Lord who is near and responsive.
- Ash-Shu'ara 26:155: Salih declares the divinely decreed water-sharing arrangement, establishing a dedicated drinking day for the miraculous she-camel and a designated day for the people.
- Al-Hijr 15:81: The Quran records how the people of al-Hijr obstinately turned away from the signs, arguments, and clear proofs brought to them by their messenger.
- Ash-Shu'ara 26:157: Thamud slaughtered the she-camel and soon woke up consumed by futile regret once they realized divine punishment was inescapable.
- An-Naml 27:51: Allah points to the final outcome of the schemers' plotting: complete destruction upon the nine conspirators and the entire community that sanctioned their corruption.
Words to know
- صَالِحٌ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ Salih 'alayhis-salam
The noble Arab prophet sent to Thamud, mentioned twenty-six times in the Quran, known for his wisdom, gentle preaching, and the sign of the she-camel.
Introduction to Salih
From the paper: «التعريف بصالح عليه السلام»
Salih was an Arab prophet descended from Sam son of Nuh. Allah sent him to Thamud, a renowned ancient Arab tribe who flourished after the fall of Ad Al-A'raf 7:74. Their homeland lay in al-Hijr, located along Wadi al-Qura between the Hijaz and the Levant, now known as Mada'in Salih near al-Ula. Because of their dwelling place, the Quran also names them the companions of al-Hijr Al-Hijr 15:80.
Thamud succeeded Ad both in time and strength Hud 11:89. Blessed with remarkable architectural mastery, they carved spacious palaces into soft clay plains for summer living and hollowed secure homes out of rocky mountains for winter warmth Ash-Shu'ara 26:149.
Long before revelation came to him, Salih held high esteem among his people. They recognized his intelligence, truthfulness, and sound management, placing immense hopes in his future leadership. Yet when he called them to leave the idols of their ancestors and worship Allah alone, they expressed bitter shock and disappointment, claiming he had dashed their expectations Hud 11:62.

The call of Salih
From the paper: «دعوة صالح عليه السلام»
Like all prophets, Salih's core message was pure monotheism Ash-Shura 42:13, An-Nahl 16:36, Al-Anbiya 21:25. The paper cites a hadith comparing prophets to brothers from one father with different mothers: their religious laws vary, but the foundation of their faith is one Al-Ma'idah 5:48. Noah, Hud, Shu'ayb, and Salih all addressed their people with the identical appeal to worship Allah alone Al-Mu'minun 23:23, Hud 11:50, Hud 11:84, Hud 11:61.
Salih approached Thamud through two complementary methods: encouraging devotion and warning against defiance.
- Encouragement through blessings: He tenderly reminded them of Allah's favors, explaining that Allah originated them from the earth, settled them to cultivate its resources, and granted them skill and physical strength Hud 11:61, Al-A'raf 7:74. He urged them to seek forgiveness, reassuring them that their Lord is close and ever-responsive Hud 11:61.
- Gentle debate and firm warning: When his people objected that he was merely an ordinary human Ya-Sin 36:15, Ibrahim 14:11, or accused him of being bewitched Ash-Shu'ara 26:153, he replied with mildness and reason Hud 11:62-63. He reminded them that defying divine truth leads to ruin, cautioning that asking for a tangible miracle and then rejecting it accelerates divine punishment Fatir 35:43, Al-A'raf 7:73, Ash-Shu'ara 26:154.

The emergence of the she-camel
From the paper: «أولًا: خروج الناقة»
Seeking to challenge Salih out of defiance, the leaders of Thamud demanded a specific sign: an extraordinary she-camel brought forth from a solid rock before their eyes Ash-Shu'ara 26:153-154. Salih asked if they would believe and worship Allah if their request was granted, and they gave him a pledge. He then prayed to Allah, who answered his supplication Al-A'raf 7:73.
The she-camel emerged pregnant and magnificent, possessing boundless milk that supplied the entire community. She was designated as Allah's she-camel, serving as an undeniable visual proof and moral test Al-Isra 17:59, Al-Qamar 54:27.
Allah instituted a strict system for the valley's water: on the she-camel's designated day, she drank from the well while the people drew her milk; on the next day, the water was reserved entirely for Thamud and their livestock Ash-Shu'ara 26:155, Al-Qamar 54:28, Ash-Shams 91:13. Salih warned his people repeatedly to let her pasture peacefully and never touch her with harm, lest swift destruction seize them Al-A'raf 7:73, Hud 11:64.

The reaction of Salih's people to the she-camel
From the paper: «ثانيًا: موقف قوم صالح عليه السلام من الناقة»
Despite witnessing undeniable wonders, the leaders of Thamud turned away in arrogance Al-Hijr 15:80-81. Over time, they resented the she-camel's presence, the alternating water schedule, and the fact that their own herds fled when she grazed Ash-Shu'ara 26:155, Al-Qamar 54:28, Ash-Shams 91:13.
Their hostility culminated in a conspiracy. Nine corrupt men in the city incited the crime An-Naml 27:48, urging on the most wretched among them, Qudar ibn Salif, who struck the she-camel's legs and slaughtered her Al-Qamar 54:29, Ash-Shams 91:11-12. Although one individual physically struck the blow, the Quran attributes the slaughter to the entire nation because the community supported, cheered, and consented to the act Al-A'raf 7:77, Hud 11:65, Ash-Shams 91:14.
Upon seeing the she-camel slain, Salih wept and delivered a solemn announcement: they had three days left in their homes before certain destruction Hud 11:65. Too late, dread took hold of them, and their arrogance turned into helpless regret Ash-Shu'ara 26:157-158.

The deliverance of Salih
From the paper: «نجاة صالح عليه السلام»
Salih continued urging his people toward repentance and pardon, reminding them that turning to Allah produces reverence and humility Hud 11:61, Al-A'raf 7:74. Rather than repenting, the nine ringleaders plotted to assassinate Salih and his household under cover of darkness An-Naml 27:50-51. Allah foiled their scheme by sending stones that struck down the assassins before they could execute their plot.
Over the three granted days of respite, Thamud endured mounting terrors: their faces turned yellow on Thursday, red on Friday, and black on Saturday Hud 11:65. On Sunday morning, a deafening blast from the sky paired with a violent earth tremor from beneath seized them, severing their hearts and leaving them lifeless corpses collapsed inside their dwellings Hud 11:67-68.
Allah saved Salih and the believers through divine mercy, protecting them from the agony and disgrace of that fateful day Hud 11:66. The magnificent rock-hewn homes of Thamud remained empty, standing as a visible sign of the consequence of persistent wrongdoing An-Naml 27:51, Ash-Shu'ara 26:157-158.

Lessons learned from his story
From the paper: «الدروس المستفادة من قصته عليه السلام»
The history of Salih offers profound reflections for believers, reformers, and entire societies across every generation Ash-Shu'ara 26:141-142.
- Consciousness of Allah: Reverence and piety toward Allah constitute the universal counsel given by all messengers Ash-Shu'ara 26:123-124, Ash-Shu'ara 26:141-142, Ash-Shu'ara 26:160-161, echoed faithfully by the righteous early generations.
- Shared societal responsibility: Although only nine corrupt men actively orchestrated the crime, Allah destroyed thousands of households alongside them An-Naml 27:50-51. A society that stays silent, condones tyranny, and fails to stop injustice shares moral culpability.
- True reform versus corruption: Disobeying Allah spreads decay throughout the earth, whereas submitting to His commands constitutes real societal restoration.
- Solace and perseverance: Recounting Thamud's hostility brought comfort to Prophet Muhammad when Quraysh opposed him, reassuring every caller to truth that divine justice ultimately prevails.
- Learning from remnants: The silent, abandoned ruins of past oppressors serve as sober warnings, calling travelers to remember the fragility of human pride when detached from divine obedience.

Takeaways
Acknowledge the Source of Your Skills and Blessings
Thamud were blessed with remarkable construction skills and agricultural abundance, yet they became arrogant. Always remind yourself that your talents, shelter, and resources are gifts from Allah meant to inspire gratitude, not self-sufficiency.
Speak Out Against Wrongdoing in Your Community
Only nine individuals planned the killing of the she-camel, yet the whole nation perished because they approved and remained passive. Staying silent when boundaries are violated spreads moral responsibility across the collective.
Approach People with Kindness and Patience
Even in the face of mockery and harsh accusations, Salih maintained dignified, gentle speech. When sharing good or calling others away from mistakes, pair firm conviction with a compassionate, caring heart.
Never Postpone Sincere Repentance
Thamud felt intense regret once they realized the punishment was on its way, but remorse after divine decrees are unleashed offers no salvation. Return to Allah immediately whenever you stumble, recognizing that He is near and answers those who turn back.
Reflect
- What material blessings or talents in your life might you be tempted to take credit for rather than attributing them humbly to Allah?
- Is there a situation around you where silence in the face of wrongdoing might amount to tacit approval?
- When people misunderstand your intentions or reject your advice, how closely does your response mirror the gentleness of Prophet Salih?

Linguistic meaning
Linguistically, al-I'rad (turning away) means averting, turning aside, and refusing to pay attention. It is derived from 'urd (side), because one who turns away does not face a matter directly but twists his shoulder and turns his side away in dismissal.
