Translation
We created you, We gave you shape, and then We said to the angels, ‘Bow down before Adam,’ and they did. But not Iblis: he was not one of those who bowed down.

Meaning and reflection
Wisdom
This verse opens a profound chapter in our story, a reminder from Allah about our very origin and the timeless struggle that began with it. Here, Allah is addressing humanity, recounting the foundational events of our existence.
Our Esteemed Origin
Allah begins by stating, "And We have certainly created you, then fashioned you" (وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ ثُمَّ صَوَّرْنَٰكُمْ). The "you" here refers to all of us, the children of Adam, created through our father Adam. As scholars like al-Qurtubi and al-Munir explain, Allah first created Adam from clay, then perfectly formed him, giving him a distinct and beautiful shape. This act highlights Allah's meticulous design and the inherent dignity He bestowed upon humanity from the very beginning. Following this, Allah commanded the angels, "Prostrate to Adam." This prostration was not worship, but an act of honor and respect for Adam and his progeny, a clear testament to humanity's elevated status. The angels obeyed immediately, fulfilling their Lord's command.
The Seed of Disobedience
However, one being refused: "except Iblis, he was not among those who prostrated." Iblis's refusal was born of arrogance (كبر) and envy (حسد), as he considered himself superior because he was created from fire, while Adam was from clay. This faulty reasoning, as al-Munir points out, led to his ultimate downfall. Iblis's mistake offers a crucial lesson: true honor and worth come from obedience to Allah and humility, not from one's perceived physical origin or intellectual arrogance. When we measure ourselves against others based on superficial traits, we risk falling into the same trap of pride that led Iblis to defy a direct divine command.
Lessons for Our Path
This story is not just history; it is a profound teaching for us today. It reminds us of the immense honor Allah has bestowed upon us, demanding our gratitude (شكر). It also unveils the timeless enmity of Iblis, who, after his expulsion, vowed to mislead humanity by obstructing us from Allah's "straight path" (صراطك المستقيم), coming at us from all directions. This means we must be ever-vigilant against temptations, doubts, and destructive comparisons that try to divert us. The contrast between the angels' humble obedience and Iblis's arrogant defiance teaches us that humility (تواضع) elevates us in Allah's sight, while arrogance (تكبر) leads to debasement, as Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught: "Whoever humbles himself for Allah, Allah raises him" and "Whoever is arrogant, Allah debases him." Let us cultivate a heart filled with gratitude for our creation and an earnest desire to walk Allah's straight path, seeking refuge from the whispers of pride and arrogance.
