وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

English: but if he is one of those who denied the truth and went astray,

Meaning & Reflection

'But if he was of the deniers, the astray...' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note the third and final envelope opened at death — the 'mukadhdhibin ad-dallin', those who denied the truth and wandered from the path, the very pairing named earlier in the Surah. Ask yourself: the same throat, the same moment, opens onto a third and terrible outcome. The verse withholds nothing: alongside the rest of the near and the peace of the right stands this. It refuses me the comfort of imagining that all deaths lead somewhere gentle. The two failures are named together again — *denial* and *straying* — because the denial is what kept them lost. It presses the honest self-examination the whole Surah has been building toward: is there denial in me, quietly keeping me astray, that I would not want sealed at the moment of my own last breath?
