۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ

English: I swear by the positions of the stars-

Meaning & Reflection

'So I swear by the positions of the stars.' Ibn Ashur and al-Biqa'i note the grandeur of the oath — 'mawaqi' an-nujum', the settings, orbits, and appointed places of the stars, the vast and precise order of the heavens — sworn upon to affirm what follows about the Qur'an. Ask yourself: God calls the entire star-strewn cosmos to witness — the immensity and exactness of the night sky invoked as the guarantee of the words He is about to praise. It tells me how weighty the thing being affirmed is: nothing less than the stars will do as its witness. And it invites me to look up and read the heavens not as scenery but as testimony — an ordered vastness pointing, as the verse says, toward the honour of revelation. When did I last let the night sky move me toward the One who set the stars in their places, and swore by them?
