'Have you considered the water you drink?' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the argument moves to the most basic necessity of all — the water without which nothing lives, the thing I consume daily without a thought. Ask yourself: water is the perfect example of a mercy so constant that it has become invisible to me — I turn a tap, and it is simply there. The verse deliberately picks the most taken-for-granted gift to make its point. When did I last drink a glass of water and register it as anything but automatic? This verse is about to trace even *this* — the plainest, most ordinary sustenance — back to its Source, and to show how easily it could be otherwise. The most overlooked gifts are often the ones my very life depends on.
