إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
English: Before, they overindulged in luxury
Bengali: তারা ইতিপূর্বে স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যশীল ছিল।
Meaning & Reflection
'Indeed, before that they were living in luxury.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the first cause named of their ruin — 'mutrafin', those softened and heedless by ease and indulgence: comfort itself dulled them to the truth. Ask yourself: this is a warning I rarely take seriously, because I associate danger with hardship, not with comfort. But the verse names *luxury* as a road to the left hand — ease that anaesthetises, abundance that makes me forget my need, softness that quietly erodes urgency about anything beyond the next pleasure. My comfortable life is not automatically safe; it can be the very thing lulling me to sleep. Where has my ease made me spiritually drowsy — too comfortable to feel any need to change, to strive, or to turn back?
