'So which of the favours of your Lord will you two deny?' al-Saadi notes the refrain here rests on the favour just named — that the very rising and setting of my days is governed by Him. Ask yourself: the arrival of another morning is perhaps the most-taken-for-granted gift I have; I wake and simply assume the day. But a dawn is not owed to me — it is issued, one at a time, by the Lord of every east and west. Which favour will I deny? Even the plain fact that I got to open my eyes to another day is on the list. What if I began tomorrow by *counting* the sunrise as a mercy, rather than as the default setting of a universe that happens to include me?
