they cannot help you against God in any way. Wrongdoers only have each other to protect them; the righteous have God Himself as their protector.

Meaning and reflection

Wording

This verse, a profound divine address, comes as a direct counsel to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after instructing him to remain firm on the divinely revealed law. It carries a vital message for anyone striving to uphold truth amidst external pressures. Allah Himself is speaking here, offering both a stern warning and immense comfort.

Unwavering Protection

The verse opens with a powerful declaration: "إِنَّهُمْ لَن يُغْنُوا۟ عَنكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْـًۭٔا" (Indeed, they will never avail you against Allah in anything). The word "إِنَّهُمْ" (Indeed, they) refers to the polytheists and those who would try to sway the Prophet from his path, inviting him to follow their whims, as explained in the immediate context.

Notice the strong, absolute negation conveyed by "لَن يُغْنُوا۟" (they will *never* avail). This isn't just a simple negative; "لن" in Arabic signals an emphatic, eternal denial. It's paired with the word "شَيْـًۭٔا" (anything, or in the slightest), reinforcing that their inability to help is total and absolute. As Ibn Ashur explains, "يُغْنُوا" comes from the root signifying "to make rich or independent," implying that these people cannot make the Prophet independent of Allah's judgment or punishment. The phrase "مِنَ ٱللَّهِ" (from Allah) further clarifies that any consequence would come directly from Allah. If one were to deviate, these allies, despite their apparent support, would be utterly powerless to defend or protect against Allah's decree.

The Contrast of Allies

Following this warning, Allah draws a sharp distinction: "وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍۢ ۖ وَٱللَّهُ وَلِيُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ" (And indeed, the oppressors, some of them are allies of others; but Allah is the Protector of the righteous).

Here, "ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ" (the oppressors) refers to those who transgress Allah's boundaries, whether through disbelief or other sins. Allah states that they are "أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍۢ" (allies of others). This highlights their solidarity, but it is a unity founded upon injustice and falsehood.

In stark contrast, "وَٱللَّهُ وَلِيُّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ" (And Allah is the Protector of the righteous). The word "وَلِيُّ" (Waliy) is profoundly rich. It means protector, guardian, helper, and close friend. Al-Zamakhshari and al-Razi both emphasize the immense difference, noting "وما أبين الفصل بين الولايتين" (And how clear is the distinction between the two types of protection or alliance). While the oppressors rely on each other, which is ultimately a weak and finite support against Allah, the righteous have Allah Himself as their ultimate Waliy. This grants believers an incomparable source of strength, guidance, and protection.

This wording invites us to reflect on where we place our ultimate trust and seek our primary alliance. Are we drawn to the fleeting, limited support of fellow humans who themselves are prone to error and weakness, or do we anchor our hopes and reliance in Allah, the ultimate Protector and Ally? The choice of allies defines one's path and ultimate destiny.
