Surah Ya-Sin 36:73
سُورَةُ يسٓ · Meccan · Verse 73 of 83
وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا مَنَٰفِعُ وَمَشَارِبُ ۖ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ
Translation
some for other benefits, and some for drink? Will they not give thanks?

Meaning and reflection
'And in them are benefits for them, and drinks. Will they not then give thanks?' al-Saadi and Ibn Kathir note the layered provision, not one use but many: transport, food, milk to drink, and more, and the verse ends, as it keeps ending, with the question: will you not thank? Ask yourself: the sheer stacking of benefits in a single creature is easy to overlook precisely because it's so generous, I take the many gifts as one undifferentiated 'normal'. This verse slows me down to count them, then asks the recurring question of the whole Surah. Gratitude, it seems, is not a feeling that arrives on its own but a noticing I have to choose. What ordinary provision, if I actually counted its layers, would move me to thank?
