لِّيُنذِرَ مَن كَانَ حَيًّۭا وَيَحِقَّ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

English: This is a revelation, an illuminating Quran to warn anyone who is truly alive, so that God’s verdict may be passed against the disbelievers.

Meaning & Reflection

'To warn whoever is alive, and that the word may be justified against the disbelievers.' Ibn Ashur and al-Biqa'i stop at 'whoever is alive' (man kana hayyan): the warning only truly reaches a heart that is still *spiritually* living; the numb, deadened heart hears the same words and feels nothing. The reminder lands where there is still life to receive it. Ask yourself: the same verse can shake one person to tears and pass through another like wind. This verse locates the difference not in the words but in whether the heart is alive. When I read the Qur'an and feel nothing, the question it presses is uncomfortable but vital: is my heart still alive to it — or have I let it go quietly numb?
