Surah Yaseen 36:48 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection
سُورَةُ يسٓ · Meccan · Verse 48 of 83
وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا ٱلْوَعْدُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ
English: And they say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, if what you say is true?’
Bengali: তারা বলে, তোমরা সত্যবাদী হলে বল এই ওয়াদা কবে পূর্ণ হবে?
Meaning & Reflection
'And they say: When will this promise be fulfilled, if you are truthful?' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note this is the recurring taunt of the deniers — treating the unknown timing of the reckoning as if it were proof against the reckoning. The demand for a date is a dodge disguised as a question. Ask yourself: I have my own version — 'if there were really consequences, wouldn't they have come by now?' I let the delay of an outcome quietly persuade me it will never arrive. But a promise is not disproven by being unscheduled. Where am I trading on 'not yet' as though it meant 'never', and relaxing into a deadline I cannot actually see?
Grounded in classical tafsir: Ibn Ashur, al-Saadi, al-Biqa'i.
Reflect with the Five Lenses
Maani's framework for Tadabbur (heart-centred reflection) on Surah Yaseen 36:48:
- Wording. Look closely at the specific words and structure. Which word stands out, and why might Allah have chosen it here?
- Quranic Worlds. Place the verse in its context — what is happening around it, and what world does it open up?
- Personal Experience. Ask not just what this means, but what it means TO me and FOR me, right now in my life.
- Connections. How does this verse connect to other verses, to the Sunnah, or to themes across the Quran?
- General Lessons. What timeless lesson or action point can I carry away and live by?
