Surah Al-Baqara 2:186 — Meaning, Translation & Reflection

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِى عَنِّى فَإِنِّى قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ ٱلدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا۟ لِى وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِى لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ

English: [Prophet], if My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I respond to those who call Me, so let them respond to Me, and believe in Me, so that they may be guided.

Bengali: আর আমার বান্দারা যখন তোমার কাছে জিজ্ঞেস করে আমার ব্যাপারে বস্তুতঃ আমি রয়েছি সন্নিকটে। যারা প্রার্থনা করে, তাদের প্রার্থনা কবুল করে নেই, যখন আমার কাছে প্রার্থনা করে। কাজেই আমার হুকুম মান্য করা এবং আমার প্রতি নিঃসংশয়ে বিশ্বাস করা তাদের একান্ত কর্তব্য। যাতে তারা সৎপথে আসতে পারে।

Meaning & Reflection

'And when My servants ask you about Me — indeed, I am near. I respond to the call of the caller when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be guided.' Ibn Ashur and al-Saadi note the intimacy — of all the questions in the Qur'an answered with 'say', this one alone God answers *directly*, without intermediary: 'I am near' ('qarib'). Ask yourself: when the servants asked *about* God, He did not send a message *through* the Prophet — He broke in and answered *Himself*, in the first person: I am near, I respond. It is the tenderest verse in the Book, and it removes every excuse of distance. He is not remote, not hard to reach, not indifferent to my call — He is *near*, and He answers. The only condition is that I actually *call* and *respond* back. When I feel God is far and unreachable, this verse is His own correction: the distance is never on His side. Am I calling on the One who says, in His own voice, 'I am near'?
