Meccan · Verse 54 of 110

English: In this Quran We have presented every kind of description for people but man is more contentious than any other creature.

Meaning & Reflection

'And We have certainly diversified in this Qur'an every kind of example for the people — but man is, more than anything, given to dispute.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note the striking verdict on human nature — 'akthara shay'in jadala': of all his traits, man is most prone to *argument*, quicker to contest the truth than to submit to it, even when it has been made abundantly clear. Ask yourself: the Qur'an spread out every kind of example, leaving the truth unmistakable — and this verse names the reflex that still resists it: not ignorance, but *argumentativeness*. I know this in myself: when a truth demands I change, my first move is often to argue — to find the objection, the exception, the counterpoint — because disputing it is easier than obeying it. Where am I using argument as a sophisticated way to *avoid* a truth I actually understand? Is my debating a search for truth, or a defence against having to submit to it?

Grounded in classical tafsir: al-Saadi, Ibn Ashur, al-Biqa'i.
