Meaning and reflection

Wording

This verse opens Surah Yusuf, immediately establishing the nature of the revelation itself. Allah, the Majestic "We" (إِنَّآ), is speaking, affirming that He is the One who has sent down this scripture. The primary audience for this declaration were the Arabs, particularly those in Makkah, who were the first recipients of this divine message. The immediate situation is one of introduction and explanation, setting the stage for the profound narrative that follows.

The Divine "We"

The verse begins with إِنَّآ أَنزَلْنَٰهُ, meaning "Indeed, We revealed it." The emphatic "Indeed" (إنّ) is used here to underscore the truth of its divine origin, responding to any doubt or denial that it came from Allah. The "We" refers to Allah, majestic in His power and authority, who brought down this scripture. The pronoun "it" (هُ) refers back to "the Clear Book" (الكتاب المبين) mentioned in the preceding verse.

What is a "Qur'an Arabic"?

Allah describes this revelation as قُرْءَٰنًا عَرَبِيًّۭا, an "Arabic Qur'an." The word *Qur'an* itself means "something recited" or "a reading," and in this context, it refers to a book specifically organized to be read repeatedly and continuously, providing lasting benefit. It's not like a letter or a poem that might be read once and set aside; it's meant for ongoing engagement.

The choice of "Arabic" is deliberate and significant. As Ibn Ashur notes, no previous scripture had been revealed in the Arabic language. This made the message clear and unambiguous to its initial recipients, the Arabs, in their native tongue. It eliminated any potential confusion that might arise from translation or foreign idioms. Even words that might have been borrowed from other languages became authentically "Arabic" through their common use by the Arabs, ensuring full clarity.

For You to Understand

The verse concludes with the purpose of this linguistic choice: لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ, "so that you may understand." Here, "so that" (لعل) doesn't imply doubt on Allah's part, but rather expresses His intended outcome and wisdom behind the revelation. It signifies that the Quran was revealed in clear, eloquent Arabic with the *purpose* that its listeners might genuinely grasp its meanings.

The word *ta'qilūn* (تَعْقِلُونَ) means to reason, comprehend, and understand deeply. It's not merely about hearing the words, but about engaging one's intellect and heart to extract the wisdom and guidance within. By using this term, Allah implies that the message is so clear in its Arabic form that anyone failing to comprehend it would be like someone lacking intellect or reason. Furthermore, the object of this understanding is left open, suggesting that it's meant to lead to the comprehension of *many* things – its miraculous nature, its profound teachings, and its detailed guidance for life. This divine design ensures that the path to understanding is laid bare for those who sincerely seek it.
