At a glance
The Quran frequently calls on human sight and inner insight, using words of vision to draw our attention from the physical world to eternal truths. Vision in the Quran is not merely an optical function; it is a gateway to knowledge, discernment, and profound spiritual awakening. By bidding us to observe the cosmos, examine historical remnants, and scrutinize physical signs, the Quran teaches us that true seeing engages both the physical eye and the spiritual heart.
At the peak of this theme lies the ultimate promise for the believers: the joyous reward of looking upon Allah's noble Face in the Hereafter. As we live our earthly lives conscious that Allah sees our deeds and hearts, this divine gaze calls us to cultivate genuine sincerity, humility, and gratitude for every blessing.
Ultimately, learning how the Quran speaks of seeing shifts how you view yourself and everything around you. It reminds us that our passing worldly sight is meant to awaken our inner insight, so that on the Day of Judgment our faces may shine brightly as they behold their Lord.

Seeing Allah Almighty
From the paper: «رؤية الله تعالى»
The Quran establishes two profound dimensions regarding seeing Allah: His sight over His creation, and the believers beholding Him in the Hereafter.
Allah's sight encompasses all things, yet His gaze of recompense is specifically directed at our deeds and internal states. He places humanity on earth to observe how we act Yunus 10:14, Al-A'raf 7:129, watching our public actions and private secrets alike At-Tawbah 9:94, At-Tawbah 9:105, An-Najm 53:40. As the paper highlights, Allah does not evaluate people based on their external appearances or wealth; rather, His gaze of consideration rests firmly upon their hearts and deeds.
Regarding humanity seeing Allah, the paper confirms that the believers will genuinely behold their Lord in the afterlife. The Quran depicts radiant, joyful faces looking directly at their Lord Al-Qiyamah 75:22-24. Furthermore, the promised increase for those who did good Yunus 10:26 is interpreted by prominent companions, including Abu Bakr, Hudhayfah, and Ibn Abbas, as looking upon the noble Face of Allah. Deniers, by contrast, are veiled from their Lord Al-Mutaffifin 83:15, proving, as al-Shafi'i noted, that the righteous shall surely behold Him.
«وبهذا يتبين أن محل نظر الله تعالى هو القلوب والأعمال، وليس الصور والأموال؛ لما رواه أبو هريرة رضي الله عنه، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: (إن الله لا ينظر إلى صوركم وأموالكم، ولكن ينظر إلى قلوبكم وأعمالكم).»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Types of vision in the Quran
From the paper: «أنواع الرؤية في القرآن»
The paper outlines three major forms of vision in the Quran: physical sensory sight, cognitive knowledge, and dream visions.
Physical vision is expressed through various terms:
- The root ra'a is used for observing the cosmos and nature to draw lessons, such as Abraham pondering the celestial bodies Al-An'am 6:75-78, observing the heavens Saba 34:9, and seeing dry earth revive with rain Al-Hajj 22:63.
- The term basar describes inspecting the flawless creation of the heavens repeatedly Al-Mulk 67:3-4, or how the truth will become plainly visible to all Al-Qalam 68:5.
- The root nazar portrays beholding decorated stars in the night sky Al-Hijr 15:16, witnessing Moses' hand shine white Ash-Shu'ara 26:33, An-Naml 27:12, or the terrified, covert glances cast by hypocrites and oppressors Muhammad 47:20, Ash-Shura 42:45.
Cognitive vision, where 'seeing' conveys definitive knowledge, occurs when certainty matches the clarity of eyesight. This includes the supplication to be taught religious rites Al-Baqarah 2:128, the Prophet being shown divine wisdom to judge fairly An-Nisa 4:105, and the promise that Allah will reveal decisive signs until the truth stands clear Fussilat 41:53, An-Naml 27:93.

The unseen world
From the paper: «العالم غير المرئي»
The Quran affirms the reality of beings that exist beyond the reach of human eyes, primarily angels and jinn.
Angels are light, noble, and obedient beings residing in the heavens Al-Baqarah 2:285, Fatir 35:1, An-Nazi'at 79:4-5, As-Saffat 37:1, Al-Haqqah 69:17, At-Tahrim 66:6, Al-Infitar 82:10-11, Ar-Ra'd 13:11. Human sensory faculties are not built to endure seeing angels in their actual celestial forms; doing so in this life would overwhelm the beholder. Hence, when sent to prophets, they appeared in human likeness Al-An'am 6:9, Adh-Dhariyat 51:24-25, Sad 38:21, Al-Hijr 15:61-62. The Prophet Muhammad was unique in seeing Gabriel in his true creation, with six hundred wings An-Najm 53:13-14, An-Najm 53:18. In the afterlife, however, believers will openly see angels surrounding the Throne and greeting them in Paradise Az-Zumar 39:75, Ar-Ra'd 13:23-24, Al-Anbiya 21:103, Fussilat 41:30-31, while the wicked face them with dread Al-Furqan 25:21-22.
Jinn, created from fire, are normally imperceptible to human eyes. Satan and his cohorts watch mankind from places unseen Al-A'raf 7:27, Fatir 35:6. This hidden reality is an independent realm, requiring believers to maintain vigilant faith and inner insight against their silent whisperings.

Seeing blessings
From the paper: «رؤية النعم»
People perceive divine favors in entirely different ways:
- The grateful soul recognizes that every gift comes entirely from Allah, asking Him for the ability to remain thankful Al-Ahqaf 46:15, recognizing the cosmic favors subjugated for humanity Luqman 31:20, and openly speaking of Allah's grace with humble deeds Ad-Duha 93:11, Saba 34:13.
- The denier, exemplified by Qarun, attributes wealth and status solely to personal intellect or merit Al-Qasas 28:76-78, or misinterprets worldly riches as proof of divine honor while treating hardship as humiliation Al-Fajr 89:15-16, Al-A'raf 7:17.
The Quran also notes sensory illusions where visual perception departs from reality:
- Looking at the mountains, a human eye deems them stationary, yet they pass along like clouds An-Naml 27:88. While many commentators link this to the Day of Resurrection An-Naml 27:87, At-Tur 52:9-10, Ta-Ha 20:105-107, Al-Kahf 18:47, others note it illustrates the subtle, imperceptible movement of mountains alongside the earth's rotation in this life.
- The deeds of disbelievers resemble a desert mirage An-Nur 24:39, An-Naba 78:20. A parched traveler sees it and mistakes optical shimmer for water, but arrives to find nothingness, meeting only Allah's precise judgment.

Seeing scientific and forensic evidence
From the paper: «رؤية الأدلة العلمية والجنائية»
The Quran frequently draws attention to visible proof, both in the natural world and in legal matters.
Scientific proofs encompass extraordinary prophetic signs as well as cosmic realities. Companions witnessed miraculous events like the splitting of the moon Al-Qamar 54:1-2, and Pharaoh's court observed Moses' staff transform and his hand emerge radiant white Al-A'raf 7:105-108, Ash-Shu'ara 26:31-33, Ta-Ha 20:22. Beyond historical miracles, Allah directs humanity to explore the cosmos and nature for undeniable evidence of His oneness Yunus 10:101, Ghafir 40:13, promising to reveal His signs across horizons and within ourselves Fussilat 41:53, Al-Anbiya 21:37, even if obstinate deniers scoff at them As-Saffat 37:14.
Forensic proofs appear vividly in legal narratives. In the story of Joseph, physical inspection of evidence was decisive: his shirt torn from the back served as definitive material proof of his innocence and the woman's deceit Yusuf 12:28, Yusuf 12:35. Similarly, Jacob noticed the false blood on Joseph's intact shirt, knowing a wolf could not devour him without tearing his garment Yusuf 12:18. Scholars build on these accounts to establish that strong circumstantial and physical evidence carries decisive legal weight.

Vision and reflection
From the paper: «الرؤية والاعتبار»
The Quran insists that vision must lead to moral reflection (i'tibar), urging humanity to ponder cosmic wonders and the fate of bygone societies.
Cosmic signs surround us: the skies, stars, alternating day and night, rain reviving dead soil, and diverse plant life Yunus 10:101, Al-Ankabut 29:20, Al-Isra 17:98-99, Ar-Rum 30:50. Traveling through the earth allows a person to witness diverse topography and reflect on the origin of creation, realizing that the One who began life will surely resurrect it Al-Ankabut 29:20. The Quran reproaches those who walk blindly past these magnificent signs without absorbing their lessons Ar-Rum 30:8-11, Al-Anbiya 21:30-32, Yusuf 12:105.
Historical remains offer an equally stark lesson. Allah repeatedly bids us to travel and observe what became of earlier empires Al-An'am 6:11, Al-An'am 6:6, Ar-Rum 30:9, Ghafir 40:21, Ghafir 40:82. Despite possessing superior physical strength, advanced agriculture, and grand buildings, their might could not shield them when they rejected truth. Their silent ruins warn travelers against heedlessness, reminding us that none of them can return to this world Ya-Sin 36:31-32, and that the everlasting home of the Hereafter is far better for the God-conscious Yusuf 12:109, Muhammad 47:10.
«أي: انظروا بالتفكر والاعتبار ماذا في السماوات والأرض من الآيات والعبر التي تدل على وحدانيته ونفاذ قدرته كالشمس، والقمر، والنجوم، والجبال، والشجر، وكل هذا يقتضي خالقًا مدبرًا سبحانه.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Seeing the recompense of deeds
From the paper: «رؤية ثواب الأعمال»
On the Day of Judgment, every soul will step forward to clearly see the exact recompense of what it performed in earthly life.
The righteous will witness their good deeds and honors, knowing that even an atom's weight of goodness is not lost Az-Zalzalah 99:6-7, Ali 'Imran 3:30. Every act of obedience will be brought forward, accepted, and multiplied through divine generosity Yunus 10:44, An-Nisa 4:40, Al-Anbiya 21:47.
In contrast, the terrifying punishment for evil will be placed in plain view. Hell will be uncovered and brought forth for all to see An-Nazi'at 79:36, fulfilling the solemn promise that humanity shall behold it with the absolute eye of certainty At-Takathur 102:3-7, Al-Furqan 25:12. People will observe the recorded ledger of everything their hands sent forth An-Naba 78:40, wishing an immense distance separated them from their wrongdoing Ali 'Imran 3:30, while the denier will cry out in desperation, wishing he were dust An-Naba 78:40. Every soul will confront its life's striving, fully visible and weighed with supreme divine justice An-Najm 53:39-41, Az-Zumar 39:48.

Seeing bliss and torment
From the paper: «رؤية النعيم والعذاب»
In the afterlife, vision culminates in the direct witnessing of eternal bliss or horrifying chastisement.
Believers will gaze upon splendid delight and vast dominion Al-Insan 76:20-21, served by youthful attendants who resemble scattered pearls in radiance Al-Insan 76:19. Conversely, transgressors will behold the torment they once denied Al-Baqarah 2:165-166, Yunus 10:54, Al-Furqan 25:42, Al-Qasas 28:64. Filled with regret, they will glance downward in utter humiliation Ash-Shura 42:45, pleading desperately for a return to the world Ash-Shura 42:44, Al-An'am 6:27-28, Yunus 10:88.
This continuous Quranic emphasis on vision leaves profound marks on the soul:
- Fostering faith, piety, and serious preparation for tomorrow Al-Hashr 59:18, An-Naba 78:39-40.
- Prompting travelers to take sobering heed from past nations Yusuf 12:109, Ali 'Imran 3:137.
- Cultivating spiritual excellence (ihsan), living and worshipping with the conscious certainty that even if you do not see Allah, He sees you.
- Deepening religious jurisprudence and understanding, as scholars derive legal wisdom and knowledge by closely examining Quranic proofs and signs Ghafir 40:13, Al-Anbiya 21:37.

Takeaways
Purify your heart, not just your outward appearance
Allah's evaluative gaze looks into the sincerity of your heart and the quality of your deeds, rather than worldly wealth or external beauty An-Najm 53:40.
Attribute every blessing directly to Allah
Unlike Qarun who claimed his success stemmed from personal genius Al-Qasas 28:78, a true believer recognizes divine favor, mentions it with gratitude, and spends it in service to others Al-Ahqaf 46:15, Ad-Duha 93:11.
Practice spiritual excellence in daily worship
Live with the conscious awareness of ihsan, knowing that even though you cannot physically see Allah right now, He is continuously watching your innermost thoughts and outward actions.
Observe the world with active, reflective eyes
Do not pass by the sky, the earth, or the historical ruins of fallen civilizations heedlessly; let visible phenomena deepen your certainty in the Creator and your accountability before Him Yunus 10:101, Yusuf 12:109.
Reflect
- When you look at your achievements, do you view them through the lens of gratitude to Allah or through personal pride like Qarun?
- How would your prayers and private habits change if you remained mindful throughout the day that Allah's gaze is upon your heart?
- When you travel or look up at the night sky, do you pause to let visible creation strengthen your faith in the Creator?
- What good deeds are you actively sending forward today so that you may look upon them with joy in the Hereafter?
