At a glance
Children are among the greatest blessings and joys that Allah bestows upon human beings. The Quran describes them as the radiant adornment of worldly life, soothing parents' hearts, lightening their burdens, and continuing their legacy. From the prophets who prayed tenderly for righteous offspring to ordinary believers seeking comfort in family, having children answers a deep, natural yearning within the human soul.
Yet the Quran pairs this gift with a profound warning: children are also a testing ground. Strong parental love can tempt a believer into compromise, leading to cowardice, greed, neglect of religious duties, or even prioritizing a child's worldly desires over divine commands. True success lies in receiving children with gratitude while maintaining one's higher devotion to Allah.
To safeguard the family, Islam outlines a balanced web of duties and rights. Parents owe their children lineage, protection, proper upbringing, and sustained care, while grown children owe their parents deep reverence, tender speech, financial support when needed, and sincere prayers across generations.
Key verses
- At-Taghabun 64:14-15: These verses warn believers that spouses and children can act as spiritual adversaries when love for them draws a person away from obeying Allah, reminding us that wealth and children are ultimately a test.
- Ali 'Imran 3:14: The Quran highlights the natural human attraction to worldly desires, placing children alongside precious wealth, while emphasizing that true, lasting goodness lies with Allah.
- Al-Kahf 18:46: This verse establishes that wealth and children are the temporary ornamentation of this fleeting life, whereas enduring righteous deeds hold superior reward and hope before your Lord.
- Al-Munafiqun 63:9: Believers are cautioned never to let their wealth or their children distract them from the remembrance of Allah and their obligatory devotions, lest they become true losers.
- An-Nisa 4:23: The Quran specifies prohibited marital relationships, protecting family sanctities and the pure lineage of sons who spring directly from one's loins.
- Al-Anfal 8:28: This verse reinforces that your wealth and offspring serve as a trial and an avenue of temptation, pointing believers toward the immense reward waiting with Allah for those who exercise restraint.
- Al-Baqarah 2:233: A foundational verse detailing the material rights of infants, mandating full nursing terms, mutual parental consultation, and fair financial provision without causing harm to either parent.

Sonship as a blessing
From the paper: «
Children are an immense gift from Allah, granted purely through divine generosity Ash-Shura 42:49-50. The Quran shows that having righteous offspring is part of the established sunnah of the noble prophets, for Allah chooses only the finest and most complete human states for His messengers Ar-Ra'd 13:38. The human soul is naturally inclined to cherish children, and the Quran lists them among the major worldly favors granted to communities that seek forgiveness Nuh 71:10-12.
Children are the delight and adornment of worldly life, easing the heavy burdens of living and filling the home with cheer Al-Kahf 18:46. Their presence brings joy to the eyes and warmth to the heart. This deep human yearning prompted prophets like Zakariyya to supplicate earnestly that Allah not leave them alone without an heir Al-Anbiya 21:89, Maryam 19:3. A crowning mercy of the afterlife is that Allah will elevate righteous offspring to join their faithful parents in the gardens of Paradise, uniting families without diminishing any person's reward At-Tur 52:21, Ghafir 40:8.
When wealth and offspring are mentioned together, the Quran routinely offers precise wisdom. The Quran places sons before wealth when highlighting the intense, innate love of the heart Ali 'Imran 3:14, yet prioritizes wealth where worldly distractions and temptations dominate Al-Kahf 18:46, At-Taghabun 64:15. Knowing that true value rests in enduring good deeds Al-Kahf 18:46, the righteous pray for pious, upright offspring who bring true benefit in both realms Ali 'Imran 3:38, Al-Furqan 25:74.

Sonship as a trial
From the paper: «
While children are a blessing, the Quran repeatedly warns that they are also a fitnah (a testing ground and moral examination) At-Taghabun 64:15, Al-Anfal 8:28. This test is not inherently evil; rather, it reveals whether a person will remain steadfast in faith or weaken under pressure. When parental love is unbalanced, children can inadvertently become enemies to a believer's spiritual growth by holding them back from migration, charity, or sacred obligations At-Taghabun 64:14-15.
The trial of children manifests in several dangerous ways:
- Spiritual neglect: Consuming one's time and energy in worldly upkeep, thereby missing daily prayers and the remembrance of Allah Al-Munafiqun 63:9.
- Moral corruption: Compelling parents into cowardice, greed, and the unlawful acquisition of wealth simply to hoard an inheritance for their offspring At-Taghabun 64:16.
- Arrogance and oppression: Using abundant sons to boast or intimidate others Ash-Shura 42:27, Al-Alaq 96:6-7, mimicking those whose offspring became an instrument of divine punishment in this life At-Tawbah 9:85.
A believer must remember that neither wealth nor children can draw anyone closer to Allah without personal faith and righteous deeds Saba 34:37, Al-Mu'minun 23:55-56. Excessive absorption in family matters risks compromising divine limits, turning a gift into a source of enduring sorrow.

Rights of children
From the paper: «
Because children are an honorable trust, Islam establishes comprehensive rights that parents must fulfill from the beginning of life An-Nisa 4:1. These rights are divided into material protections and moral, spiritual safeguards:
- The right to life: Islam strictly outlaws female infanticide, the killing of children out of poverty, and abortion, affirming that Allah provides for parents and children alike At-Takwir 81:8-9, An-Nahl 16:58-59, Al-An'am 6:151, Al-Mumtahanah 60:12.
- Physical nourishment and nursing: Mothers are directed to breastfeed their infants for two full years, supported by fair financial provision from the father, with any weaning decided through mutual consultation Al-Baqarah 2:233, At-Talaq 65:6.
- Lineage and identity: Islam fiercely protects the child's true lineage by mandating legitimate marriage, prohibiting fornication, and abolishing formal adoption practices that obscure true biological paternity Al-Ahzab 33:4-5, An-Nisa 4:23.
- Upbringing and moral education: Parents are charged with instilling pure monotheism and righteous character, following the timeless example of Luqman counselling his young son against idolatry Luqman 31:13.
Providing these physical, emotional, and spiritual rights turns children into ongoing charity that continues benefiting parents long after they leave this world.
«وما دام الأولاد نعمة ومتعة وزينة، فإن الإسلام رتب لهؤلاء الأبناء حقوقًا من قبل الآباء، وهي حقوق تقضي بها الفطرة السوية، ولكن الإسلام مع هذا وضع الضوابط والقواعد التي تحافظ عليها، وتحول دون التفريط فيها أو إساءة القيام بها».»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Duties of children
From the paper: «
In return for the lifelong devotion of parents, the Quran places immense responsibility on children, demanding both tangible support and deep emotional respect An-Nisa 4:11, Al-Isra 17:23.
Materially, needy parents hold an undeniable right to support from their child's wealth. The Prophet taught that a child and their wealth belong to their parent, since children are among a person's purest earnings. Scholars explain that this right allows a parent to take what they genuinely need for subsistence, provided it does not harm the child or unfairly favor one sibling over another An-Nisa 4:14, Al-Baqarah 2:229.
Morally, children must show unconditional kindness and reverent care Al-Isra 17:23, Al-Ahqaf 46:15. As parents enter fragile old age, children are forbidden from expressing the slightest irritation, uttering 'uff', or speaking harshly. Instead, they must offer words of noble dignity, remembering the painful sacrifice and exhaustion the mother endured during pregnancy, delivery, and infancy Al-Ahqaf 46:15. Reaching full maturity at forty should awaken deep gratitude in the child, inspiring earnest prayer that Allah helps them thank Him for the blessings granted to them and their parents An-Naml 27:19.
«أوصى الله تعالى بالآباء خيرًا، وأوجب لهم على أبنائهم حقوقًا، منها معنوية؛ كتوقيرهما، والتلطف في مخاطبتهما، وعدم التأفف منهما، وأخرى وما دية؛ كالنفقة بالمعروف على الموسر.»موسوعة التفسير الموضوعي للقرآن الكريم

Takeaways
Qualify Your Desires with Righteousness
When praying for offspring, follow the noble prophetic sunnah by asking for pious, upright children rather than mere numbers, ensuring they become a source of blessings rather than a spiritual burden Ali 'Imran 3:38, Al-Furqan 25:74.
Never Let Family Lead You to Sin
Parental affection must never justify earning unlawful wealth, displaying cowardice, or breaking divine laws, for children cannot defend you before Allah on the Day of Judgment At-Taghabun 64:14-15, Al-Munafiqun 63:9.
Protect the Sanctity of Lineage
Uphold your children's moral rights by ensuring their legal identity is firmly rooted in true parentage, maintaining ties of kinship and avoiding practices that obscure biological truth Al-Ahzab 33:4-5.
Honor Aging Parents with Patient Speech
Treat elderly parents with tender humility, banning all expressions of frustration or annoyance, and repay their early sacrifices through gentle, noble words and ongoing prayers Al-Isra 17:23, Al-Ahqaf 46:15.
Reflect
- In what ways might your love or anxiety for your children be distracting you from your devotions to Allah?
- When you pray for your children or future family, are you asking primarily for worldly success or for spiritual uprightness?
- How gently do you speak to your own parents when their needs require your patience and sacrifice?

Linguistic meaning
The term al-ibn refers to a male child, derived from a root meaning to build, because a father builds his son and Allah makes the father a means for bringing the child into existence.
