Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:56

سُورَةُ الوَاقِعَةِ · Meccan · Verse 56 of 96

هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

Translation

This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement.

English translation: M.A.S. Abdel Haleem.

Meaning and reflection

'This is their welcome on the Day of Recompense.' Ibn Ashur and al-Biqa'i note the bitter irony in the word 'nuzul', the term for the hospitality a host lays out to welcome a guest. The Zaqqum and boiling water are darkly named their 'welcome-feast'. Ask yourself: the word is chosen to sting, the reception, the homecoming meal, is torment. It frames the whole scene as an arrival, a hospitality, deliberately inverting the language of welcome. It also quietly reminds me that I am arriving somewhere, being received by an outcome I am preparing now. Every guest's welcome is set by the road they travelled to reach it. What 'welcome' am I preparing for myself, and does the direction of my life have me arriving to the feast of the right hand, or to this?

Grounded in classical tafsir: Ibn Ashur, al-Biqa'i, al-Saadi.
