Surah Ar-Rahman 55:36
سُورَةُ الرَّحۡمَٰن · Medinan · Verse 36 of 78
فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
Translation
Which, then, of your Lord’s blessings do you both deny?

Meaning and reflection
'So which of the favours of your Lord will you two deny?' al-Saadi notes the refrain here follows a warning, and warnings, too, are favours: to be shown the danger clearly, while there is still time to avoid it, is an act of mercy, not menace. Ask yourself: I flinch from hard warnings and prefer soothing words, but a doctor who names the disease early is kinder than one who lets me feel comfortable toward my ruin. Which of His favours will I deny, including the uncomfortable mercy of being warned? The refrain, laid even beside images of punishment, insists that the warning itself is a gift from a Lord who would rather I turn back than be caught.
