Meaning and reflection
Wording
In this profound verse, Allah turns our gaze to a powerful historical example of His support for His messengers and those who believe with them. It serves as a consolation and reassurance, particularly for Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the early Muslims, echoing the promise of divine victory mentioned just before it.
A Firm Promise
The verse opens with the emphatic particle "وَلَقَدْ" (Wa laqad), which translates to "And indeed We certainly." The scholars, like al-Jadwal, note that this construction includes a "lam of oath" (ل) and "qad of realization" (قد), emphasizing the absolute certainty and firmness of the statement that follows. It's as if Allah is swearing by His own might that this truth is undeniable.
Giving and Inheriting
Allah says, "ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْهُدَىٰ" (Aatayna Musa al-Hudā), meaning "We gave Moses the guidance." The word "آتَيْنَا" (Aatayna) signifies a direct, personal bestowal from Allah to Musa. This "الْهُدَىٰ" (al-Hudā), which means 'the guidance,' as explained by scholars like al-Zamakhshari and al-Razi, encompasses everything Musa received in matters of faith: his prophethood, the miracles he performed, the divine laws, and the Torah itself. It was a comprehensive divine endowment.
Immediately after, the verse says, "وَأَوْرَثْنَا بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ" (wa awrathnā Banī Isrāʼīla al-Kitāb), meaning "and We made the Children of Israel inherit the Book." Notice the shift in wording from "gave" to "made inherit" (أَوْرَثْنَا). Ibn Ashur explains that this is a powerful metaphor. While Musa directly received the guidance and the Torah, Bani Isra'il, the Children of Israel, *inherited* the Book (specifically the Torah) after Musa. This means Allah ensured it remained with them, passed down through generations, making them custodians of its message and laws. This distinction highlights Musa's unique role as the primary recipient of revelation and the community's responsibility to preserve and live by it. Musa received the full guidance, including his prophethood, while Bani Isra'il inherited the specific teachings contained within the Book.
The Comprehensive Guidance
The terms "الْهُدَىٰ" (al-Hudā, the guidance) and "الْكِتَٰبَ" (al-Kitāb, the Book) also have distinct yet connected meanings. "Al-Hudā" is broader, encompassing all forms of divine direction and truth given to Musa. "Al-Kitāb" refers more specifically to the written revelation, the Torah. Ibn Ashur points out that the Book is a *part* of the overall guidance. By mentioning both, the verse underscores the completeness of what Musa was given and the specific, tangible inheritance that was left for his people. It's a reminder that divine guidance often comes in various forms, culminating in a revealed scripture that humanity is entrusted to uphold.
