Surah Ya-Sin 36:43
سُورَةُ يسٓ · Meccan · Verse 43 of 83
وَإِن نَّشَأْ نُغْرِقْهُمْ فَلَا صَرِيخَ لَهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنقَذُونَ
Translation
If We wished, We could drown them, and there would be no one to help them: they could not be saved.

Meaning and reflection
'And if We willed, We could drown them, then no one would answer their cry, nor would they be saved.' al-Saadi and Ibn Ashur note the sharp turn: the very water that carries can also swallow, and the buoyancy that feels so ordinary is a mercy actively held in place, not a law that owes us anything. One withdrawal and the ship becomes a grave, with no rescuer. Ask yourself: I treat the reliability of the world, that water floats my boat, that the ground holds, as a guarantee. This verse strips the guarantee back to what it is: a mercy sustained moment by moment. Do I live gripping my securities as rights, or holding them as gifts that could, by His wisdom, be let go?
