Surah Al-Baqarah 2:82
سُورَةُ البَقَرَةِ · Medinan · Verse 82 of 286
وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ
Translation
while those who believe and do good deeds will be the inhabitants of the Garden, there to remain.

Meaning and reflection
Wording
This beautiful verse opens a window into Allah's boundless mercy and justice, presented as a clear contrast to the preceding warnings. It defines the path to eternal bliss in Paradise.
A Clear Path to Paradise
The verse begins with "وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ" (And those who believed and did righteous deeds). This phrasing is crucial because it pairs belief (إيمان, *iman*) with action (عمل الصالحات, *amal salih*). As Imam al-Razi points out, this connection indicates that mere verbal or intellectual belief alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by virtuous actions. The Quran consistently links these two, showing them as inseparable components of a life pleasing to Allah. The word "الصالحات" (righteous deeds) is plural, emphasizing not just a single good act, but a consistent pattern of living according to Allah's guidance.
True Companions
For this distinct group, Allah declares: "أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ" (These are the companions of Paradise). The demonstrative pronoun "أولئك" (these) points to them specifically, highlighting their unique status. The word "أصحاب" (companions, or literally "owners of") conveys a sense of belonging and permanence. They are not merely guests, but residents, deeply connected to Paradise as if it is their rightful home. This strong link emphasizes the security and honor bestowed upon them by Allah.
Everlasting Abode
The verse concludes with an emphatic statement: "هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ" (They will abide therein forever). This word, "خالدون" (eternal dwellers), underscores the absolute and unending nature of their reward. Ibn Ashur notes that "khulood" here carries its true, literal meaning of everlasting residence. This stands in stark contrast to the claims of some in previous verses who believed their punishment in the Hellfire would be "أَيَّامًا مَعْدُودَةً" (a few counted days). The definitive and eternal nature of Paradise for believers, just like the eternal punishment for disbelievers described earlier, highlights the finality of divine justice and the ultimate reward for a life of faith and good deeds. This balance between warning and promise, as al-Razi observes, is a recurring theme in the Quran, designed to keep a believer's fear and hope in equilibrium.
