Meaning and reflection
Wording
This verse is a profound address from Allah, through His Messenger, to those who stubbornly reject faith despite clear signs. It carries a tone of stark warning and consequence.
What the wording reveals
The verse opens with a rhetorical question: فَهَلْ يَنتَظِرُونَ إِلَّا مِثْلَ أَيَّامِ ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ (Do they await anything but the like of the days of those who passed before them?). The combination of "هل" (is it?) with "إلا" (except) isn't asking a genuine question, but rather functions as a strong negation, meaning "They await nothing *except*..." As Ibn Ashur explains, this is a metaphorical, mocking, and disapproving way of saying that the only thing left for these disbelievers to expect is the same kind of divine punishment that befell previous nations who rejected their prophets.
The word "أَيَّامِ" (days) here doesn't refer to ordinary time. Rather, as al-Zamakhshari and Ibn Ashur point out, it signifies the momentous and destructive events, the "occurrences" or "battles" of Allah that struck those past communities. It's like saying "the days of the Arabs" to mean their significant historical encounters, often implying hardships and judgments. So, the disbelievers are being reminded that their persistent denial has led them down a path where the only outcome left is similar calamities.
A shared waiting, different outcomes
Then comes the command to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him: قُلْ فَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ إِنِّى مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُنتَظِرِينَ (Say, "Then wait; I am with you among those who wait"). The word "فانتظروا" (then wait) is a direct challenge to the disbelievers, a consequence (signified by the "fa") of their choice to persist in denial. Ibn Ashur highlights the elegant conciseness here, as Allah tells the Prophet what to say, and the Prophet then speaks to his people.
The Prophet's statement, "إِنِّى مَعَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْمُنتَظِرِينَ" (I am with you among those who wait), is particularly striking. While he says he is "with them" in the act of waiting, the outcome of that waiting is vastly different. As Ibn Ashur explains, this is a subtle literary device (kināyah) that indicates the Prophet's expectation of victory and the promised divine aid for himself and the believers, and of course, the promised punishment for the disbelievers. The shared "waiting" thus signifies the certainty of Allah's decree, but the specific "thing waited for" will be diametrically opposed for the two groups. For the disbelievers, it's a waiting for destruction; for the Prophet, it's a patient waiting for Allah's justice and triumph.
