How to Start Reflecting on the Quran (A Beginner’s Guide)

By Maani Team · 2026-01-25

You’ve heard about Tadabbur (Reflection). You know it’s important. But when you open the Mushaf, you stare at the page, and the page stares back. Where do you start?

Here is a simple, practical way to begin your session.

1. The Heart Check ️

Before you read a single word, check your "filter".

"Had we sent down this Recital upon a mountain, you would have seen it HUMBLED and CRUMBLED..." (Quran 59:21)

If a mountain would crumble, why don't our hearts? Usually, because they are hard. Action: Make a specific dua: "O Allah, unlock my heart for Your Book. Remove the veils between me and Your guidance."

2. The Slow Down

We are used to "finishing the Juz." Shift your mindset from Quantity to Quality. Read one page. Or even just one Ayah. Read it again. And again.

3. The Mirror Question

As you read, hold the Ayah up to your life like a mirror.

  • If it mentions the Righteous: Do I see myself in them?
  • If it mentions the Hypocrites: Do I share any of their traits? (Be honest!)
  • If it mentions Jannah: Do I yearn for it?

4. The Action Point

Don't close the book until you have one takeaways. It doesn't have to be a life overhaul. It can be small:

  • "I will call my mother today because this Ayah mentioned kindness to parents."
  • "I will say 'Astaghfirullah' 100 times because this Ayah mentioned forgiveness."

Start today. Your heart is waiting.
